From cryptogenic to ESUS: Toward precision medicine?
Rev Neurol (Paris). 2022 May 18:S0035-3787(22)00592-6. doi: 10.1016/j.neurol.2022.01.016. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCryptogenic infarctions are infarctions without a defined cause, despite a complete work-up. They differ from infarctions of undetermined causes, which may involve overlapping causes or an incomplete investigation. It is also different from uncommon heritable and non-heritable causes. The term embolic stroke of undetermined source (ESUS) proposed in 2014 is defined as a non-lacunar brain infarct without proximal arterial stenosis or cardioembolic sources. The major advantage of this definition compared to...

Inter- and Intrahemispheric Dissociations in Ideomotor Apraxia: A Large-Scale Lesion-Symptom Mapping Study in Subacute Brain-Damaged Patients
Pantomimes of object use require accurate representations of movements and a selection of the most task-relevant gestures. Prominent models of praxis, corroborated by functional neuroimaging studies, predict a critical role for left parietal cortices in pantomime and advance that these areas store representations of tool use. In contrast, lesion data points to the involvement of left inferior frontal areas, suggesting that defective selection of movement features is the cause of pantomime errors. We conducted a large-scale voxel-based lesion–symptom mapping analyses with configural/spatial (CS) and body-part-as-objec...

An analysis of after hours MRI scans in a busy tertiary hospital neuro intensive care unit-Does your patient safety is at jeopardy? (P7.326)
CONCLUSIONS: Based on the above results we are in the process of developing selective patient defined criteria for performing after hours MRI scan in the ICU as an important quality measure to improve patient's safety. We highly recommend all hospitals to take such initiatives to improve patient's safety especially in the ICU setting Study Supported by: Disclosure: Dr. Nattanmai Chandrasekaran has nothing to disclose. Timely and Appropriate Administration of Inhaled Argon Provides Better Outcomes for tMCAO Mice: A Controlled, Randomized, and Double-Blind Animal Study
ConclusionsTimely iAr administration during ischemia showed optimal neurological outcomes and minimal infarct volumes. Moreover, an appropriate duration of argon administration was important for better neuroprotective efficacy. These findings may provide vital guidance for using argon as a neuroprotective agent and moving to clinical trials in acute ischemic stroke.

A cross-sectional evaluation of home health service in patients with chronic neurologic diseases in a province of Turkey
In this study, we aimed to compare patients’ characteristics, comorbid risk factors, medical supplies, and caregivers’ demographics between stroke patients and patients with other chronic neurological diseases receiving home health services. In our study, between November 2013 and March 2014, chronic neurological disease (CND) patients having home health services were enrolled in the study. During patient visits, patients were assessed by the questionnaire comprising the modified Rankin scale (mRS), Barthel index, Zarit caregiver burden scale, and mini nutritional assessment (MNA). Stroke patients were classified as Gr...

Pre-Mixing tPA: Moving Past Gestalt (P2.303)
Conclusions: While pre-mixing tPA does not incur financial risk as drug manufacturers replace unused vials without cost, stroke centers remain wary of wasting the drug. We believe succinct criteria can reduce avoidable tPA waste, allowing health care providers to remain fiscally responsible while ensuring AIS patients are treated as fast as possible.Disclosure: Dr. McCarthy has nothing to disclose. Carnosol Inhibits Cerebral Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury by Promoting AMPK Activation
CONCLUSION: Carnosol has a protective effect on ischemic stroke, and this effect is achieved through AMPK activation. Our study demonstrates the protective effect of carnosol on cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury and provides a new perspective for the clinical treatment of ischemic stroke.PMID:36775042 | DOI:10.1016/j.brainresbull.2023.02.003

Incidence and prevalence of treated epilepsy among poor health and low-income Americans
Conclusions: The Medicaid population has a high incidence and prevalence of epilepsy, in an order of magnitude greater than that reported in the US general population. This indigent population carries a disproportionate amount of the epilepsy burden and deserves more attention for its health care needs and support services.

Systemically administered anti-TNF therapy ameliorates functional outcomes after focal cerebral ischemia
Conclusions: Our data suggest that XPro1595 and etanercept improve functional outcome after focal cerebral ischemia by altering the peripheral immune response, changing blood and spleen cell populations and decreasing granulocyte infiltration into the brain. Blocking solTNF, using XPro1595, was just as efficient as blocking both solTNF and tmTNF using etanercept. Our findings may have implications for future treatments with anti-TNF drugs in TNF-dependent diseases.

New Windows into the Brain: Technological Advances in Detecting and Treating Neurological Disorders (P4.185)
CONCLUSIONS • Visualase is a new MRI-guided laser technology often used to treat hard-to-reach and otherwise inoperable brain and spine tumors. The procedure can be performed while a patient is awake and requires only one stitch to close the surgical site. The laser thermal ablation technique destroys lesions and also has proven to be effective for epilepsy patients. • The minimally invasive NICO BrainPath - detailed fiber-tracking combined with precise image-guidance - effectively treats subcortical and deep brain lesions as never before. The procedure is part of the Six Pillar Approach. The presenter is one of ...

Predictors of Poor Outcome in Bacterial Meningitis: Retrospective Analysis of Nationwide Inpatient Sample (P5.046)
CONCLUSIONS: In this retrospective study, every decade increase in age, teaching hospital status and development of complications like hydrocephalus, ischemic stroke, seizures, intracranial abscess and respiratory failure were predictors of poor outcome. Every calendar year increase was a negative predictor of poor outcome. Study Supported by:Disclosure: Dr. Dharaiya has nothing to disclose. Dr. Modi has nothing to disclose.
