Oral point of care test to predict head and neck squamous cell cancer
Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is the 6th most common cause of cancer mortality throughout the world affecting some 50,000 people in the U.S. The ability to detect the disease in a potentially malignant phase and earlier stage should have positive impact on outcome. Previous studies demonstrated that a combined salivary CD44, a tumor-initiating marker, and total protein assay was able to aid in the diagnosis of HNSCC. We sought to understand the performance characteristics of these biomarkers in a prospective population using a qualitative, point-of-care assay (POC) for both CD44 and total protein.

Immune checkpoint inhibitors in oncology: a primer for molecular imaging Cancer Care
1213Objectives: n 2011, the first immune checkpoint inhibitor monoclonal antibody was approved by FDA for treatment of advanced melanoma. Since then several new agents have been approved by FDA and increasingly been used as the first or second-line treatment for various neoplasms including melanoma, non-small cell lung cancer, head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, urothelial carcinoma, and renal cell carcinoma. A subset of patients treated with these drugs demonstrates an atypical response pattern of initial progression followed by an eventual partial or complete response which was called pseudoprogression. These drugs ca...

Socioeconomic disparities in timeliness of care and outcomes for anal cancer patients
ConclusionsThese results highlight the impact of social contextual factors on health. Interventions targeted at socioeconomically vulnerable populations are needed to reduce disparities in ASCC outcomes.

Combination of Cold Plasma and Pulsed Electric Fields – A Rationale for Cancer Patients in Palliative Care
Publication date: Available online 3 February 2020Source: Clinical Plasma MedicineAuthor(s): Christina M. Wolff, Anna Steuer, Ingo Stoffels, Thomas von Woedtke, Klaus-Dieter Weltmann, Sander Bekeschus, Juergen F. KolbAbstractCancer continues to be a significant threat to human health. Oncotherapy, therefore, relies on the combination of different approaches to increase a patient's chances. If therapeutic options are exhausted, effective palliation can at least still improve the quality of life. Over two decades ago, electrochemotherapy (ECT), which is based on pulsed electric field (PEF) exposures, was introduced in pallia...

Influence of health care systems on mortality in adult patients with cancer
CONCLUSIONS: Among insured patients with cancer in southern California, those diagnosed within KPSC had lower overall mortality compared with the OPI group. Furthermore, this protective effect was greatest for African American/Black patients and Hispanic patients.PMID:34002959 | DOI:10.37765/ajmc.2021.88631

A review and case report of enigmatic superficial endometrial spread of cancer of the uterine cervix: Need for vigilance in the primary care setting
J Family Med Prim Care. 2021 Sep;10(9):3505-3510. doi: 10.4103/jfmpc.jfmpc_39_21. Epub 2021 Sep 30.ABSTRACTCervical cancer is a leading cause of cancer-related morbidity and mortality. It usually spreads via direct invasion and lymphatics. Few cases with superficial spread to the uterine endometrium, fallopian tubes, and ovaries have been observed. The staging of these cases, as well as management, is not yet clear due to limited data. The Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) staging disregards uterine spread to upstage the disease, and it also fails to provide clear guidelines regarding the superficial extension...

Embedding electronic patient-reported outcome measures into routine care for patients with stage III MELanoma (ePROMs-MEL): protocol for a prospective, longitudinal, mixed-methods pilot study
Introduction The benefits of patient-reported feedback, using questionnaires that allow patients to report how they feel and function without any interpretation from healthcare professionals, are well established. However, patient-reported outcomes measures (PROMs) are not routinely collected in patients with melanoma in Australia. The aim of this study is to evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of implementing electronic PROMs (ePROMs) into routine care from the perspectives of patients with stage III melanoma and their treating clinical team. Methods and analysis A minimum of 50 patients and 5 clinicians will be r...
