Integration of palliative care in the management of oral squamous cell carcinoma
Bioinformation. 2023 Jan 31;19(1):1-4. doi: 10.6026/97320630019001. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTOral Squamous cell Cancers (OSCC) is strongly associated with tobacco consumption. We here in present a case study of a OSCC patient who refused standard oncological care (SOC), to highlight the importance of integrating palliative care (PC) for improved patient outcomes. A 61 years male patient, with history of chewing tobacco for more than 20 years and diagnosed to have OSCC for 1.5 years presented with severe anaemia and a cauliflower-like growth (12 x 10 cm) in the left oral cavity and cheek with greenish-yellow discharge. Pus ...

Intratumoral Bacteria as Mediators of Cancer Immunotherapy Response
Cancer Res. 2023 Sep 15;83(18):2985-2986. doi: 10.1158/0008-5472.CAN-23-1857.ABSTRACTMultiple lines of evidence spanning from animal models to human clinical trials indicate that the microbiome influences cancer immunotherapy response. Whereas initial studies focused exclusively on the gastrointestinal (gut) microbiota-tumor axis, more recent studies have examined the possibility that bacteria located within tumor cells or within the tumor microenvironment mediate cancer treatment response. Strikingly, this phenomenon has been demonstrated in cancers that arise in anatomic locations that are traditionally thought to be dev...

Calorie Restriction Impairs Anti-Tumor Immune Responses in an Immunogenic Preclinical Cancer Model
Conclusions: Our present results suggest that a physical condition restricted in energy intake in cancer patients may impair CD8+ T cell immune surveillance and the efficacy of immunotherapy.PMID:37630828 | DOI:10.3390/nu15163638

Age-dependent modulation of gut microbiome in response to tumor immunomodulation
In this study, we sequentially treated young mice (~8 weeks) and old mice (>18 months) with bilateral melanoma using FUS and calreticulin nanoparticles (CRT-NP) to enhance immunogenic cell death. The combination of CRT-NP and FUS (CFUS) demonstrated greater efficacy in inducing regression of treated and untreated tumors in young mice compared to old mice. The diminished effectiveness in older mice was associated with significant differences in gut microbiome composition, characterized by alterations in bacterial species and splenic immune cells. Specifically, young mice exposed to CFUS exhibited higher abundance of Bact...

Longitudinal analysis of the Alternative Healthy Eating Index-2010 and incident non-communicable diseases over 15 years in the 1973-78 cohort of the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's Health
Br J Nutr. 2023 Jul 20:1-30. doi: 10.1017/S0007114523001605. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn studies that contain repeated measures of variables, longitudinal analysis accounting for time-varying covariates is one of the options. We aimed to explore longitudinal association between diet quality and non-communicable diseases. Participants from the 1973-78 cohort of the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's Health (ALSWH) were included if they; responded to survey 3 (S3, 2003, aged 25-30 years) and at least one survey between survey 4 (S4, 2006) and survey 8 (S8, 2018), were free of NCDs at or before S3, and provided die...

Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide in Aging Biology: Potential Applications and Many Unknowns
Endocr Rev. 2023 Jun 26:bnad019. doi: 10.1210/endrev/bnad019. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRecent research has unveiled an expansive role of NAD+ in cellular energy generation, redox reactions, and as a substrate or co-substrate in signaling pathways that regulate health-span and aging. This review provides a critical appraisal of the clinical pharmacology and the pre-clinical and clinical evidence for therapeutic effects of NAD+ precursors for age-related conditions, with a particular focus on cardiometabolic disorders, and discusses gaps in current knowledge. NAD+ levels decrease throughout life; age-related decline in ...
