Most common dermatologic topics published in five high-impact general medical journals, 1970-2012: melanoma, psoriasis, herpes simplex, herpes zoster, and acne.
CONCLUSIONS: Internists frequently diagnose herpes simplex, herpes zoster, and acne, which are also common dermatologic topics published. Although internists infrequently diagnose melanoma and psoriasis, they are major topics for general medical journals because of their increased community awareness, major advancements in therapeutic research, and their nondermatologic manifestations. Factors Related to Delayed Diagnosis of Cutaneous Melanoma in the Brazilian Public Health System
AbstractIn Brazil, 75% of the population uses theSistema Único de Saúde (SUS), public health system, where the general practitioner (GP) is responsible for melanoma diagnosis. Identify the factors related to the delay in diagnosing melanoma patients assisted by SUS. A prospective observational study based on a questionnaire and medical records review assessed the sociodemographic features, melanoma signs and symptoms, previous knowledge of the disease, and factors related to delays in seeking medical care. One hundred sixty-six patients were included. Healthcare professionals suspected a lesion in only 23.5% of cases. Th...

Barriers and facilitators of adherence to medical advice on skin self-examination during melanoma follow-up care
DiscussionThe identification of short and long-term predictors of skin self-examination and an increased understanding of barriers will allow health care professionals to better address patient difficulties in adhering to this life-saving health behavior. Furthermore, the findings will enable the development and evaluation of evidence-based, comprehensive intervention strategies. Ultimately, these findings could impact a wide range of outreach programs and secondary prevention initiatives for other populations with increased melanoma risk.

Board #253 - Program Innovation Testing Medical Students' Skills Using Prosthetic Dermatologic Lesions on Standardized Patients (Submission #11574).
Conclusion: There were no differences between the groups in scoring the pneumonia aspect of the case nor in overall performance on the CSA. Among the students who encountered an SP with a M prosthesis, 14.0% mentioned the presumptive diagnosis of melanoma (or cancer) to the SP; 79.4% recommended referral to a dermatologist and supplied accurate documentation. Among the students who encountered a BN, 6.7% diagnosed the lesion as benign, and 68.3% reassured their SP that the lesion could be followed without referral. Although there was disparity between the groups on whether they shared their diagnostic impression with their...

DNA Methylation and Uveal Melanoma.
Conclusions: Our review reveals the complex mechanisms underlying the tumorigenesis of UM and highlights the great needs of future studies to discover more genes/5'-C-phosphate-G-3' sites contributing to the development/metastasis of UM and explore the mechanisms through which epigenetic changes exert their function in UM. Quality, Readability, and Understandability of German Booklets Addressing Melanoma Patients
AbstractBooklets are the preferably used form among patient education materials and are often handed out during medical consultations in dermatological oncology settings. However, little is known about how beneficial they are and whether they correspond to essential quality characteristics. To assess the quality, readability, and understandability of currently freely available booklets written in German addressing melanoma patients (MP). Melanoma booklets in accordance with predefined criteria were searched and analyzed. Three reviewers independently assessed their quality and understandability by applying the DISCERN tool...

Medical Students' Knowledge, Attitudes, and Behaviors With Regard to Skin Cancer and Sun Protective Behaviors.
Conclusion: Physicians are uniquely positioned to counsel patients regarding sun-protective behaviors. Thus, a medical school curriculum that includes education about the sun's effect on health is needed for the prevention and early recognition of skin cancer in future patients. Enhancing dermatology education with social media platforms: Are we there yet?
Introduction: The rise in skin cancer incidence has heightened awareness for greater knowledge of basic skin conditions, that extends beyond dermatologists. Studies have demonstrated that errors in identifying skin diseases and failures to call dermatology consultations have resulted in diagnostic delays and poor clinical outcomes. Thus, it has been advocated that students receive greater exposure to dermatology in medical school. We aim to understand current student perceptions of their dermatology education and attitudes toward using social media as a platform to deliver dermatology education.

What Do You Do For Breast Milk Jaundice?
Discussion Almost all infants in the first few days of life have some elevation of their bilirubin because of the various physiologic changes they undergo in the transition to extra-uterine life. This is a common problem managed by many different inpatient and outpatient healthcare providers. This hyperbilirubinemia is usually unconjugated and resolves in the first 1-2 weeks of life. However, when it does not resolve, health care providers have 3 general paths to follow when considering a cause: inadequate breast milk intake, an underlying organic cause or breast milk jaundice. Inadequate breastfeeding is not uncommon and...

Predictors of long-term employment among patients with cystic fibrosis undergoing lung transplantation.
CONCLUSION: Pre-transplant employment is the dominant factor influencing lung transplantation employment in people with cystic fibrosis. People with cystic fibrosis undergoing lung transplantation should be encouraged to work for as long as their health status permits. Professional reintegration after successful lung transplantation should be supported by a multi-disciplinary lung transplant team. PMID: 32667678 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Immune Checkpoint Inhibitor-Related Pulmonary Toxicity: Focus on Nivolumab.
Authors: Bukamur H, Katz H, Alsharedi M, Alkrekshi A, Shweihat YR, Munn NJ Abstract The development of checkpoint inhibitors has changed the treatment paradigm for cancer. Checkpoint inhibitors nivolumab, pembrolizumab, and cemiplimab target programmed death-1 (PD-1), whereas durvalumab, avelumab, and atezolizumab target PD-ligand 1. Ipilimumab targets cytotoxic T lymphocyte-associated antigen 4. Used as monotherapy or in combination, these inhibitors have shown remarkable efficacy in melanoma, lung cancer, urothelial cancer, and many other solid tumors, and indications are continuing to evolve. Checkpoint inhibito...

Glycolytic pathway candidate markers in the prognosis of oral squamous cell carcinoma: a systematic review with meta-analysis.
Authors: Mattos SEC, Diel LF, Bittencourt LS, Schnorr CE, Gonçalves FA, Bernardi L, Lamers ML Abstract Molecular changes that affect mitochondrial glycolysis have been associated with the maintenance of tumor cells. Some metabolic factors have already been described as predictors of disease severity and outcomes. This systematic review was conducted to answer the question: Is the glycolytic pathway correlated with the prognosis of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC)? A search strategy was developed to retrieve studies in English from PubMed, Scopus, and ISI Web of Science using keywords related to squamous cell ca...
