Randomized Controlled Trial of Storytelling vs Didactic Education Effects on Dietary Colorectal Cancer Risk Behaviors among Latinxs
J Health Care Poor Underserved. 2021;32(3):1531-1553. doi: 10.1353/hpu.2021.0148.ABSTRACTDietary patterns associated with risk for colorectal cancer (CRC) may contribute to continuing health disparities in Latinx populations. Latinx from low-income communities, aged 25-65, were randomized to a 12-week storytelling-based intervention (ST) (n = 300) or didactic learning (DL)(n = 285) classes on cancer screening and dietary changes related to CRC risk facilitated by Latinx lay health workers (promotora/es de salud). Dietary intake was assessed pre-and post-intervention (24-hour dietary recall) with no significant differences ...

Locating sex- and gender-specific data in health promotion research: evaluating the sensitivity and precision of published filters.
CONCLUSIONS: Although search filters can facilitate the identification of research evidence to enable decision making, variability in study abstracting and indexing can limit the generalizability and usability of these filters. This potential for variability should be considered when deciding to incorporate a search filter into any literature search. This research highlights the importance of this awareness when developing strategies for searching the published literature and the potential value of supplementing database searching with other methods of study identification. Development of a comprehensive list of criteria for evaluating consumer education materials on colorectal cancer screening
Conclusions: This comprehensive list of criteria clearly has a wider range of evaluation than previous assessment tools. It is not intended as a final quality assessment tool, but as a first step toward thorough evaluation of specific information materials for their adherence to EBHI requirements. This criteria list may also be used to revise leaflets and to develop evidence-based health information on CRC screening. After adjustment for different procedure-specific criteria, the list of criteria can also be applied to other cancer screening procedures.

Comparison of Resident Self-Evaluation to Standardized Patient Evaluators in a Multi-Institutional Objective Structured Clinical Examination: Objectively Measuring Residents' Communication and Counseling Skills
Background For the past 30 years, there has been a growing emphasis on communication and self-evaluation skills training in graduate medical education. This is reflected in the Next Accreditation System. The Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) is widely used in graduate medical education for assessing dimensions of interpersonal communication and counseling skills. The OSCEs may be developed to target challenging clinical scenarios difficult to capture in clinical practice and can be used as a medium for resident self-evaluation. Objectives The aims of the study were to evaluate residents' interpersonal, ...

The effect of pain-education nursing based on a mind map on postoperative pain score and quality of life in patients with colorectal cancer
This study aimed to investigate the impact of pain-education nursing with the aid of mind maps on postoperative pain scores and quality of life in patients with colorectal cancer. The medical records of 100 colorectal cancer patients treated from July 2020 to July 2022 were selected as retrospective research participants and divided into control and observation groups. The control group received routine pain care, and the observation group was given pain-education nursing based on a mind map. The effects on quality of life, pain, negative emotions, and comfort after nursing were compared between the 2 groups. There was no ...

Impact of continued mailed fecal tests in the patient‐centered medical home: Year 3 of the Systems of Support to Increase Colon Cancer Screening and Follow‐Up randomized trial
CONCLUSIONSA centralized mailed FOBT CRC screening program continued to be more effective than patient‐centered medical home usual‐care interventions, but only for those patients who had previously completed FOBT testing. Research is needed regarding how to engage patients not completing CRC testing after being mailed at least 2 rounds of FOBT tests. Cancer 2015. © 2015 American Cancer Society.

Why Doctors Are Using Snapchat Glasses in Operating Rooms
Shafi Ahmed dons a pair of digital sunglasses and explains how the tiny lenses built into its black plastic frame, which can capture high-resolution images, are transforming how doctors get trained in operating rooms. The British colorectal surgeon used Snap Inc.’s high-tech spectacles a year ago to walk rookie physicians and millions of curious viewers through a hernia operation using the Snapchat photo-sharing app. In 2018, he plans to beam his avatar into operating rooms with so-called immersive technology, which spans everything from military training to adult entertainment, and promises to support the next gener...

Knowledge and Awareness of Colorectal Cancer Early Warning Signs and Risk Factors among University Students in Jordan
AbstractIn the present study, we aimed to assess the level of awareness regarding CRC warning signs and risk factors among undergraduate students. A cross-sectional survey using standardized questionnaire developed by the Cancer Research Center in the UK was carried out in three different public universities in Jordan including Jordan University of Science and Technology, Yarmouk University, and AL al-Bayt University over a 5-month period. Volunteers were asked about their knowledge regarding CRC symptoms, risk factors, and their behaviors regarding seeking medical advice. Findings revealed that response rate was 80.1%. Va...

Quality Assessment of Online Resources for the Most Common Cancers
AbstractThe internet is a common source of health information for patients with cancer. Despite research surrounding the quality of online resources for individual types of cancer, these results may not necessarily be easily extrapolated to cancer resources as a whole. Thus, we aim to use a standardized tool to produce generalizable results by analyzing the quality of online resources for the most common cancers. Educational websites pertaining to breast, lung, prostate, and colorectal cancers were searched using multiple search engines. After screening against pre-specified inclusion criteria, the most visible 100 website...
