Patient’s Education Before Mastectomy Influences the Rate of Reconstructive Surgery
Abstract Breast reconstruction (BR) should be offered and discussed to each woman with breast cancer who planned for mastectomy, except the cases with severe comorbidities. However, the majority of these patients do not undergo reconstructive surgery. A 20-question survey was administered to a group of 50 women (age 29–83 years, median 53) treated with mastectomy. 22.4 % underwent reconstruction of the breast, 24.5 % declared an interest in BR in the future, 53.1 % were not interested in reconstructive surgery. 51.2 % obtained information concerning BR before surgery, 58.1 % after and 44.2 % both before a...

Community research collaboration to develop a promotores-based hereditary breast cancer education program for Spanish-speaking Latinas
AbstractBreast cancer (BC) is the most common cancer in Latinas and the leading cause of cancer death. Latinas tend to be diagnosed at later stages, receive poorer quality care and have a higher risk of mortality than non-Latina White (NLW) women. Among women with a genetic predisposition to hereditary BC, genetic counseling can be beneficial. Latinas participate in genetic counseling at lower rates than NLW women. The goal of this study was to develop comprehensive, culturally appropriate materials for community health educators (promotores)-led hereditary BC education program for Spanish-speaking Latinas. We developed th...

Development and Modification of a Culturally Tailored Education Program to Prevent Breast Cancer in Korean Immigrant Women in New York City
AbstractBreast cancer (BC) is the most common cancer in Korean American (KA) women. In view of its high prevalence in these women, their low screening rates, and the cultural influence of BC risk factors in their lifestyles, we developed a community-based culturally tailored BC prevention program, the Korean Breast Cancer Risk Reduction Program (KBCRRP). Guided by the PRECEDE-PROCEDE and health belief models, the KBCRRP was developed to achieve four goals: (1) healthy weight, (2) physically active lifestyle, (3) healthy diet, and (4) BC screening and adherence. KBCRRP combines effective multicomponent strategies for BC scr...

Pot Song as a Novel Cancer Communication Intervention: Lessons Learned from Developing, Implementing, and Evaluating a Culturally Grounded Intervention for Breast Cancer Education in Rural Bangladesh
AbstractTargeted public education may offer an approach to achieving more effective treatment in countries like Bangladesh, where breast cancer is a leading cause of cancer death in women. Effective cancer education interventions address the target population ’s cultural and contextual needs. However, there is little published literature to guide the development of educational cancer interventions in a region where lack of resources combined with cultural stigma about cancer contribute to poor breast health outcomes for women. The goal of the current s tudy was to design, test, and evaluate a culturally grounded interven...

Diabetes and Cancer Co-management Education: Leveraging the Patient Activated Learning System (PALS) for Patients with Breast Cancer
AbstractMore than 70% of cancer patients have one or more comorbid conditions, and diabetes is one of the most common and burdensome comorbidities. However, existing patient-centered education materials often fail to acknowledge how to co-manage cancer and diabetes, leaving patients feeling overwhelmed and searching for guidance. Our team sought to fill this knowledge gap by using the Patient Activated Learning System (PALS), a patient-centered, publicly available platform, to generate patient-centered education materials about co-managing diabetes and cancer. Using insights from 15 patient interview transcripts, we develo...

Development and Implementation of an Online Education Program on Advanced Breast Cancer for European Cancer Nurses: ABC4Nurses Project: a Brief Report
AbstractBreast cancer is now the most commonly diagnosed cancer worldwide. Approximately 30% of those who present with early breast cancer later develop advanced breast cancer (ABC). Additionally, approximately 6% have advanced breast cancer at diagnosis. New treatment options result in an extended lifespan dominated by cycles of deterioration and stable disease. Specialist nurse knowledge is key to multidisciplinary care of people with ABC; however, access to education on ABC for nurses is not universally available in Europe. This paper describes the development and implementation of an online bespoke program on ABC care ...

Engaging Immigrant and Refugee Women in Breast Health Education
Abstract This project assessed the impact of a community-based educational program on breast cancer knowledge and screening among Buffalo (NY) immigrant and refugee females. Program participants completed language-matched pre- and post-test assessments during a single session educational program; breast cancer screening information was obtained from the mobile mammography unit to which participants were referred. Pre- and post-test knowledge scores were compared to assess changes in responses to each of the six individual knowledge items, as well as overall. Mammogram records were reviewed to identify Breast Imag...

The Role of Community Education in Increasing Knowledge of Breast Health and Cancer: Findings from the Asian Breast Cancer Project in Boston, Massachusetts
Abstract In the past decade, cancer rates have significantly decreased in the USA, but breast cancer survival is lower in Asian American women, likely due to lower rates of screening behaviors in Asian Americans compared to other ethnicities, which could lead to later stage cancer diagnosis and increased mortality. This paper reports on the Asian Breast Cancer (ABC) Project, a three-phase peer-led community program designed to promote cancer prevention by improving breast cancer screening rates among Chinese and Vietnamese women in the Greater Boston area. The three phases of planning and coalition building, commu...

Argentina ’s National Program for Control of Breast Cancer: Time 1, Patient Navigation, and Patient Cancer Education Experience
AbstractArgentina has the second highest mortality rate for breast cancer (BC) in South America. The age-standardized incidence of BC in Argentina is 73 per 100,000. Despite the availability of early detection services, 30% of BCs are diagnosed at advanced disease stages. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) of Argentina and the National Program for Control of Breast Cancer (NPCBC) focus on two main objectives: guaranteeing adequate and timely BC treatment and reducing BC mortality in Argentina. These objectives are addressed by maintaining three core concepts: quality control, disease monitoring, and wide coverage of avail...
