Association of cervical atherosclerosis on Doppler ultrasonography and postoperative delirium in patients undergoing spinal surgery: a single-center, retrospective, observational study
ConclusionsThere was a significant association between POD and the prevalence of cervical atherosclerosis using the univariate logistic regression analysis. Furthermore, multivariate logistic regression analyses showed that older age and antiplatelet agent use were independently associated with POD.

Osteoporotic fracture admissions compared to other major medical admissions in Irish public hospitals
ConclusionOsteoporotic fractures represent a large and rapidly increasing illness burden amongst older Irish adults, with substantial care requirements and the resulting onus on our healthcare system. Urgent action is needed to address this public health issue and the services for those at risk of fracture.

Anemia is associated with increased risk of non-vertebral osteoporotic fractures in elderly men: the MrOS Sweden cohort
ConclusionsAnemia is associated with an increased risk for any fracture and non-vertebral osteoporotic fracture in elderly men with a long follow-up time. The cause is probably multifactorial and our results support that anemia can be used as a predictor for future fracture.

Effects of Zoledronate on Cancer, Cardiac Events, and Mortality in Osteopenic Older Women
ABSTRACTWe recently showed that zoledronate prevented fractures in older women with osteopenia (hipT‐scores between −1.0 and −2.5). In addition to fewer fractures, this study also suggested that women randomized to zoledronate had fewer vascular events, a lower incidence of cancer, and a trend to lower mortality. Co ‐morbidities only account for a small proportion of excess mortality after fracture: a record linkage study of individual fracture types
Conclusion: All proximal non‐hip, non‐vertebral fractures in women and men were associated with increased mortality risk. Co‐existent co‐morbidities independently further increased mortality. Population attributable risk for mortality for fracture was similar to cardiovascular disease and diabetes, highlighting their importance and potential benefit for early intervention and treatment. Incidence And Risk Factors For 30-Day Readmissions After Hip Fracture Surgery.
CONCLUSIONS: The overall rate of readmission following hip fracture surgery was moderate. Surgeons should consider discharge optimization in the at risk cohorts identified here, particularly patients with multiple medical comorbidities or an elevated ASA class, and should focus on wound complications and fall risks in order to minimize readmissions. Further, quality-reporting metrics should account for the risk factors identified here, in order to prevent penalties against surgeons who take on complex patients. Conclusions People who undergo THA or TKA may present with a variety of medical morbidities. Accordingly consideration should be made on how to encourage the adoption and maintenance of physical activity and healthy lifestyle choices for this population.
