President Joe Biden Announces COVID-19 National Emergencies Will End on May 11
WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden informed Congress on Monday that he will end the twin national emergencies for addressing COVID-19 on May 11, as most of the world has returned closer to normalcy nearly three years after they were first declared. The move to end the national emergency and public health emergency declarations would formally restructure the federal coronavirus response to treat the virus as an endemic threat to public health that can be managed through agencies’ normal authorities. IJERPH, Vol. 19, Pages 13259: Long-Term Impact of COVID-19 on Hospital Visits of Rural Residents in Guangdong, China: A Controlled Interrupted Time Series Study
e Li Wen Chen To date, there is a lack of comprehensive understanding regarding the effect of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on the healthcare-seeking behavior and utilization of health services in rural areas where healthcare resources are scarce. We aimed to quantify the long-term impact of COVID-19 on hospital visits of rural residents in China. We collected data on the hospitalization of all residents covered by national health insurance schemes in a county in southern China from April 2017 to March 2021. We analyzed changes in residents’ hospitalization visits in different areas, i.e., within-...

Public View of Public Health Emergencies Based on Artificial Intelligence Data
This study designs an expert system for network public view and optimizes the algorithm for the key problem: SFC deployment. Finally, the system was put into real news and public opinion research on new coronavirus epidemic prevention, and experimental tests were carried out. The experimental results have shown that in the new coronavirus incident, the nuclear leakage incident, and the epidemic prevention policy, the data obtained by the public through the Internet are 50%, 68.06%, and 64.35%, respectively. For the system function in this study, both ICSO and IPSO are far better than the optimization results of CSO and PSO...

Listing of the neutralizing antibodies amubarvimab and romlusevimab in China: Hopes and impediments
Drug Discov Ther. 2022 Aug 13. doi: 10.5582/ddt.2022.01055. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic continues to ravage the world, and the virus' constant evolution has made it increasingly difficult to contain. The combination of the neutralizing antibodies amubarvimab and romlusevimab has recently been introduced as a treatment for COVID-19 in China. Based on its potential to effectively combat severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and its Omicron variant at a modest cost and under medical insurance, this controversial biotherapy is anticipated to be widely av...

COVAX Was a Great Idea, But Is Now 500 Million Doses Short of Its Vaccine Distribution Goals. What Exactly Went Wrong?
In January 2020, world leaders and industry titans gathered in Switzerland for the World Economic Forum’s annual Davos conference. Much of the conversation centered around the mysterious new coronavirus that had emerged in Wuhan, China, a month earlier, and had at that point infected nearly 300 people in four countries. Two of the conference’s attendees were Dr. Seth Berkley, CEO of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, and Dr. Richard Hatchett, CEO of the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI). Over scotch and nachos one night, Berkley and Hatchett got to talking about worst-case scenarios. “&lsquo...

American Industrial Policy in Action
Scott LincicomeIn case you haven't noticed, U.S. industrial policy is having (yet another) moment. Armed with the latest data and cross-country comparisons, a large and bipartisan cadre of industrial policy advocates in Washington are eager to shovel billions of taxpayer dollars into the open arms of American manufacturers of "essential goods" and "critical technologies." The risks (China, pandemics, whatever), so the theory goes, greatly outweigh any harms that a few, scattered industrial policy failures might cause along the way, so whynot just throw money at the (perceived) problems? These advocates, however, rarely ack...

Quantitative analysis of RNA by HPLC and evaluation of RT-dPCR for coronavirus RNA quantification
In this study, we developed HPLC method combined with enzymatic digestion of RNA to nucleotides for quantification of RNA without RT process. This method was metrologically traceable to four nuceloside monophosphate (NMP) Certification Reference Materials of National Institute of Metrology, China (NIMC) for insurance of accuracy. The established method was used to evaluate the reverse transcription digital polymerase chain reaction (RT-dPCR) of three target genes of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) RNA, including open reading frame 1ab (ORF1ab), nucleocapsid protein (N) and envelope protein (E) gene....
