Call for minute ’s silence to honour all workers who have died from coronavirus
The country is to be asked to observe a minute’s silence next Tuesday (28 April) to remember all the health, care and other key workers who have lost their lives to coronavirus, in a campaign launched today (Monday) by three health unions.
UNISON, the Royal College of Nursing and the Royal College of Midwives – who between them represent more than a million NHS and public service workers, including porters, refuse collectors and care staff – are urging politicians, employers, people at work and those on lockdown at home to join the tribute at 11am.

New PPE guidance for NHS teams
The UK Government and NHS leaders from a range of medical and nursing royal colleges have published new guidance about personal protective equipment (PPE) for NHS teams who are likely to come into contact with patients with coronavirus.
The guidance has been agreed by the four Chief Medical Officers, Chief Nursing Officers and Chief Dental Officers in the UK and is applicable in all parts of the UK.
The updated guidance reflects the fact that coronavirus is now widespread in the community, meaning clinicians are more likely to see patients with the virus, some of whom may have minimal or no symptoms. The guidance is based ...

Lack of protective equipment for health and social care staff is “a crisis within a crisis”
The heads of Britain’s health and social care unions have today (Wednesday) warned ministers that the lack of personal protective equipment (PPE) for health and social care workers is a “crisis within a crisis”.
In a joint statement – signed by seven organisations including UNISON, the Royal College of Midwives, GMB, Unite and TUC – they call on the government to urgently increase the supply of PPE to staff in the NHS and social care.

Medical royal colleges and homeless charities call for doctors to receive mandatory training in keeping homeless patients off the streets
The Royal College of Physicians (RCP), along with seven other medical royal colleges and homeless charities, has called on the Government to urgently address the needs of homeless people treated in the NHS.
The organisations made their call in a collective response to the government’s consultation on the Homelessness Reduction Act (HRA), which includes a duty to refer homeless patients in Accident and Emergency departments to their local housing authority.

Five new Mary Seacole scholars are unveiled
Five nursing and midwifery specialists were inducted as scholars at this year’s prestigious Mary Seacole awards today (Thursday 24 October) at a ceremony at St Thomas’ Hospital in London.
UNISON co-sponsors the awards, which offer an opportunity for healthcare workers to undertake a project, educational or development activity that benefits and improves the health of people from BME communities.
Recipients have been working on their projects for the past year, funded by Health Education England, and today is the culmination of all their hard work.

No-deal will leave NHS gasping for breath
Commenting on the statement from the TUC and health unions on the threat posed to the NHS by a no-deal Brexit, UNISON general secretary Dave Prentis said:
