The mounting NHS staffing crisis and long waiting times will become permanent unless the government brings in a game-changing retention package, with an inflation-busting pay rise at its heart, say health unions today (Monday).
In evidence to the independent NHS pay review body (NHSPRB), the 14 unions – representing 1.2 million health staff in England – are calling on ministers to act urgently with a significant wage boost. They say this would help halt the growing exodus of exhausted staff from the NHS.

Health organisations stand together against abuse
The country’s leading health organisations – between them representing hundreds of thousands of NHS staff – have today (Wednesday) come together to stand against the abuse to which they have been subjected during the pandemic.
The group – which includes the Royal College of Midwives (RCM), UNISON, and the NHS Confederation – has also urged the public to stand with them.

Health unions have written to new health secretary Sajid Javid stressing the crucial importance of pay in ensuring the NHS is ‘fighting fit’ to deal with its many post-pandemic challenges.

New NHS flexible working rights to improve work-life balance and retain staff
An agreement on new flexible working rights aimed at giving NHS staff a better work-life balance is announced today (Tuesday) by health unions and NHS employers.
The deal will make it easier for workers to request flexible working arrangements including a right to do so from the first day staff are employed in the NHS.

Unions representing NHS staff across the UK say the chancellor has let down hard-working health workers by failing to announce a pay rise for them in the Budget.
