UNISON members urge MPs to save the NHS bursary
Student nurses descended on Parliament today to tell MPs not to scrap the NHS bursary. Around 80 student nurses, midwives, health care assistants and others attended the mass lobby organised by UNISON and other organisations. The government plans to scrap the NHS bursary, which was originally set up to acknowledge the fact that nurses work for the NHS – for free – for half the time they’re studying. Today UNISON members told their MPs that it’s wrong to saddle nurses with what would amount to indvidual debt of £51,600. The NHS bursary is a lifeline for nursing, midwifery and other health students. Nursing is consi...

Plans to scrap student bursaries may cost the NHS more not less, says new report
Government plans to scrap the bursary funding for students on nursing, midwifery and other health degrees will mean around 2,000 fewer people a year will study for a career in the NHS, according to a new independent economic analysis released today (Wednesday) by UNISON and NUS. This plummet in the number of NHS students will mean even fewer qualified new recruits for the NHS from 2020, causing trusts to spend more on agency staff or overseas recruitment to make up the inevitable shortfall in numbers, says the report. The publication of the study – commissioned by UNISON and NUS from London Economics – coincides with a...

Staff increases 'insignificant', warns BMA
Modest increases in NHS staffing levels are ‘insignificant’ and go no way towards addressing the vast challenges facing the health service, according to the BMA. The warning comes after a report published by the HSCIC (Health and Social Care Information Centre) showed a 1.8 per cent rise in overall numbers of FTE (full-time-equivalent) staff working in the NHS in the period ending 30 September 2015, compared to the same period the previous year. BMA council chair Mark Porter (pictured) said that the increase, which translates to an additional 18,300 across the whole health service, would not begin to address th...

Mom Schools The Internet On The Magic Of Breast Milk In Viral Post
A mom's viral Facebook post is teaching the Internet about the power of breast milk. On Feb. 14, Mallory Smothers posted a photo of two side-by-side bags of her pumped breast milk from two consecutive days. The bag on the right contained milk pumped on the second day, after a night spent nursing her baby, who had started coming down with a cold. Citing a 2013 study from Clinical and Translational Immunology, Smothers offered a possible explanation for the discrepancy in appearance between the two milks. "I read an article from a medical journal not too long ago about how Mom's milk changes to tailor baby's needs in more...
