A ground-breaking study into a simple blood test that could help predict and prevent heart failure has been awarded the most prestigious research prize by the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP). RCGP working to improve GP eye care knowledge
Just one third (34.1%) of respondents were confident in diagnosing symptoms or signs of age-related macular degeneration, with only half of GPs confident in diagnosing diabetic retinopathy (48.8%), glaucoma (51.2%) or refractive error (49.3%). The UK Vision Strategy survey, undertaken in collaboration with the Royal College of General Practitioners serves to establish levels of awareness amongst GPs and their practice teams in terms of managing the eye health of their patients and the needs of their patients with sight loss. Steep rise in antibiotic use for coughs and colds
ConclusionThis cross-sectional study has found the proportion of people with coughs and colds that are prescribed antibiotics rose from 36% in 1999 to 51% in 2011 – an increase of approximately 40%. This is despite the publication of guidance recommending that GPs do not prescribe antibiotics for coughs and colds. It also found substantial variation between different GP practices, with 10% of practices prescribing antibiotics for less than 32% of cases and 10% of practices prescribing antibiotics for more than 65% of cases, suggesting that substantially lower rates of prescribing could be achieved.The study also looke...
