The Bond Market Can “Fight the Fed” (And Sometimes Win)
Alan ReynoldsA favoriteWall Street Journal columnist,James Mackintosh, quotes an economist saying that because the price ‐earnings ratio for stocks rises when bond yields fall, “The most capitalist valuation metric in the world, the P/E of the S&P 500, is now just completely dominated by monetary policy. ”That would make sense if increases in the Fed ’s policy rates were matched by increases in 10‐year bond yields. On the contrary, bond yields have instead fallen from 3.49% on June 14 when the fed funds rate was 0.33 to 2.78% on August 10 when the funds rate has risen to 2.32%.The red line in the graph ...

Healthcare M & A Landscape
Healthcare is in a really fascinating place right now especially given some of the craziness that’s happening in the world.  We see a lot of things happening and they are often hard to reconcile.  This is particularly true in the world of healthcare M&A.  Plus, this applies to healthcare organization M&A and also health IT company M&A. Ed Marx, CEO at Divurgent, offered this perspective on what’s happened and is going to happen with M&A on the healthcare provider side of things. M&A is here to stay. Our team are former hospital leaders who have lived M&A and can partner with you as n...

The New Deal and Recovery, Part 20, Appendix: The Fate of Rosie the Riveter
George SelginInassessing the possibility that a severe downturn occurred at the end of WWII, I took issue with conventional wartime and postwar output statistics, while taking the period ' s unemployment statistics at face value. In so doing I set aside a hypothesis that disputes the unemployment numbers themselves. According to it, large numbers of would-be wartime women workers left the labor force not because they didn ' t want to keep working, but because they faced impossible odds of staying employed. If that was the case, then official figures substantially understate the real extent of unemployment, and whatever act...

The Macro View – Health, Economics, and Politics and the Big Picture. What I Am Watching Here And Abroad.
August 11, 2022 Edition-----It is hard to go past just how bad the level strategic stability in the world seems to have gone backwards with the war hardly stopping, Nancy Pelosi poking Chinese bears. The UK imploding economically and Europe on the brink of collapse.I have never seen it this bas and many senior commentators agree. Really very worrying!-----Major Issues.-----https://www.theaustralian.com.au/nation/newspoll-record-electoral-satisfaction-rating-for-anthony-albanese/news-story/6ad1f681586961423e3eb75a05b99949Newspoll: Record electoral satisfaction rating for Anthony AlbaneseSimon BensonJuly 31, 2022Anthony Alba...

The New Deal and Recovery, Part 20: The Phantom Depression
George SelginIt was supposed to be a  debacle. As the Second World War drew to a  close, the nation’s leading economists feared that, once the armed services demobilized, at least 8 million men and women, perhaps many more, would be unemployed. That meant an unemployment rate of 12 percent—almost as high as the rate before Hitler raided the Low Countries, setting off the “ wartime boom.” If their forecasts were reliable, they meant that the postwar economy could end up being no closer to recovery than the prewar economy had been.A Worst ‐Case ScenarioOf course, such dire predictions weren ’t unconditional....

Who Will Guard the Fact Checkers?
John SamplesRobby Soave atReason examinesthe intervention of the fact checkers at Meta into a recent political debate. Let ’s stipulate that the question of whether we are in a recession or not is complicated, and reasonable people can take either side of this issue. Of course, the First Amendment protects expression on both sides of this issue; the Biden administration could not simply censor criticisms of its views about recessions. It is equally true that Facebook, on its own or at the behest of its fact checkers, may suppress on its platforms all criticism of the Biden administration ’s views about recess...

The Macro View – Health, Economics, and Politics and the Big Picture. What I Am Watching Here And Abroad.
August 04, 2022 Edition-----The war seems to grind on sadly and Pres. Biden is having a second round with COVID as unprecedented weather happens all over the US. It all feels rather like ‘the end of days’!In the UK we see an increasing chance of a third female PM being elected as the country seems to be struggling. We do need to remember however the UK remains a significant power with nuclear weapons and home-grown nuclear submarines! In OZ we have had last week working out how to progress the First Nations ‘Voice’ as we wrap up the 1st session of Parliament for the new Government. Comments welcome on how you think ...

The Macro View – Health, Economics, and Politics and the Big Picture. What I Am Watching Here And Abroad.
July 28, 2022 Edition-----Sadly the war drags on, Biden seems to be pretty impotent on most policy fronts and the US seems to be heading into a recession. Not good,In the UK the choosing the next PM is off and running as the country and Europe are cooling down after a heatwave (for them) of biblical proportions! In OZ Parliament is meeting which is when the rubber will really hit the road as a new virus wave runs out of control still! We need to do more to control it as we realise just how bad long COVID is!-----Major Issues.-----https://www.afr.com/policy/economy/how-a-nobel-laureate-got-australian-economists-offside-...

Recovered, but Not Whole: U.S. Jobs Rebounded but Not for Everyone
The U.S. labor market is on track to hit a milestone this month or next: It will have recovered all of the jobs lost in the pandemic recession. But the pandemic recession and its recovery treated men and women differently, and treated women of color differently from white women. (Source: The RAND Blog)

The New Deal and Recovery, Part 19: War, and Peace
George SelginThanks to the Roosevelt Recession, in the spring of 1938 the New Deal ' s " Keynesians " finally found themselves in the saddle, displacing the planners, reformers, and trust-busters whose legislative efforts had already run out of steam some months before. The Keynesians ' rise was symbolized by the $3 billion spending program FDR announced during hisfireside chat that April.[1]But the crisis that gave Keynesians the upper hand also proved fatal to the Roosevelt administration ' s more ambitious plans, Keynesian or otherwise. Thanks to it, voters sent many Democrats, and New Deal democrats especially, packing...

The Macro View – Health, Economics, and Politics and the Big Picture. What I Am Watching Here And Abroad.
July 14, 2022 Edition-----The biggest news this week was the assassination of the ex-PM of Japan – Shinzo Abe – who was a good friend to OZ incidentally. In the US we have had a wind-up to a busy summit season – NATO etc – and the ongoing war in Ukraine which is becoming a deepening, protracted and horrible situation which it seems hard to resolve sadly. In the UK Boris is out but not gone and the battle for the succession is off and rolling. In OZ we have Albo back and we need to work out what to mitigate these various natural disasters and actually get on with it!!!! The response has been pathetic so far I reckon!--...

The Macro View – Health, Economics, and Politics and the Big Picture. What I Am Watching Here And Abroad.
July 07, 2022 Edition ----- Frankly, the Western world seems to be going ‘to hell in a handbasket’ with recession seemingly coming everywhere, China being more assertive and the Russian war just grinding on as inflation is eroding living standards everywhere. What a shambles! In the UK we are seeing Boris hanging on as a recession looms and inflation also roars. As of today he still hangs on! In OZ we have the PM all over except Australia as we send dud patrol boats to the South Pacific nations as we also look to be heading to recession. I hope the rain has eased off in Eastern OZ by the time you read this! ----...
