The truth about hypoglycemia
I’ve received this question a number of times over the years: “I have episodes of hypoglycemia that make me really tired, foggy, and shaky. My doctor says to drink a glass of orange juice or eat some candy immediately and it works. But what should I do on the Wheat Belly lifestyle?” First of all, let’s put aside hypoglycemia–low blood sugars, generally 70 mg/dl (3.8 mmol/L) or less–that occurs in people with diabetes. In diabetics, it is a matter of making adjustments in insulin or other medications, or avoiding blood sugar drops during exercise, sleep, or prolonged periods of not eating...

If you have diabetes: NO low blood sugars!
Wheat elimination starts you powerfully on the path to reversing diabetes. We’ve seen it many times and it continues to develop in people who kiss their bagels, pretzels, and processed foods booby-trapped with wheat goodbye. But, as diabetics become less diabetic–a process that can occur VERY quickly, often within days of removing all wheat products from their diet–but they are taking insulin or certain diabetes drugs, there is potential for hypoglycemia or low blood sugar. Low blood sugar from diabetes drugs can be dangerous and should be avoided at all costs. (Imagine if a non-diabetic started administ...

Food and Cancer—A Complicated Relationship
Marian L. Tupy Cancer, we are told, lurks everywhere: popcorn, non-organic fruit, canned tomatoes, processed meats, farm-raised salmon, potato chips, foods (salted, pickled, and smoked), GMOs (of course), candy, artificial sweeteners, diet soda, alcohol, red meat; even white flour can kill you.   Enough already! In fact, a recent study by researchers at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine contends that most occurrences of cancers are simply a result of bad luck. To wit, “Plain old bad luck plays a major role in determining who gets cancer and who does not, according to researchers who found that tw...

Meatless Monday Recipe: Okra Gumbo with Chickpeas & Kidney Beans
Another happy Meatless Monday! In celebration of Mardi Gras tomorrow, I wanted to share one of my favorite vegan friendly gumbo recipes: Okra Gumbo with Chickpeas and Kidney Beans. This thick and tangy gumbo is made with a toasty roux, fresh tomatoes, plenty of onion and garlic, fresh thyme, and of course, okra. What I love most is that it only requires one big pot and 25-minutes of active cooking time, leaving me with minimal cleanup and more time to spend with my family out of this kitchen, a perfect weeknight meal! I serve my gumbo over brown basmati rice or quinoa (and perhaps a sliced vegan sausage if I’m feeli...

reluctantly gluten free
Last fall, I got tired of feeling crummy all the time. I'm sure the fatigue and the gastrointestinal issues were exacerbated by the round of antibiotics I'd had to go on after my surgery but I just wasn't getting better. I needed to give myself a chance to heal.In the spring, a cousin and her spouse had been on the Brown Rice Diet. Laura also happens to be a naturopathic doctor, so I had asked her about it at the time and got her to send me the info. It's not a diet in the weight loss sense of the word but more of an elimination of all potential allergens. For three weeks, the only grain I ate was brown rice. I ate chicken...

Forget the Diet Plans: The No-Brainer Way to Eat Healthy AND Lose Weight
During my life I’ve had a love/hate view of “the meal plan” segment of diet books. I want to make it work, but often it just takes too much time and effort to follow the plan and so I don’t stick with it for more than a couple days. I’ve read many many books and articles on nutrition, food as medicine, and weight loss. In that time I’ve come up with a simple formula that I use to eat healthy and lose/maintain weight. What follows is a simple approach to eating that is both healthy and conducive to losing/maintaining your desired weight. The 5 Pillars of Healthy Eating Remembering...

My Month of (Almost) No Internet
By Leo Babauta I’m starting 2014 with the hardest month of my Year of Living Without so far: no Internet all day. OK, let’s rephrase that — I’m not going to use the Internet all day, except to post stuff to my blogs/sites or for programming. And for an hour at 5pm each day. That means from morning until 5pm, I can’t check email, read stuff online, do admin stuff for my business online, go to my bank websites, look stuff up. To be clear, here are the only exceptions: To look stuff up or read about programming. This is because I’m spending about half of each day in January to learn p...
