School as a contested territory for citizenship: An ethnographic study of illegal occupation and protest processes at a popular vocational education school in the chilean october.
This article presents the results of an ethnographic study conducted at a vocational school in the marginalized suburbs of the Santiago metropolitan area, focused on analyzing how the practices and discourses that students deployed at the school challenge the definition of school and the citizen practices inside of it, and through these, make the school a public space. The results show that the situated response practices undertaken by the students served to contest and transform the school space, redefining the concept of citizenship, in the sense that student mobilization challenged the conceptualizations of citizenship ...

When my neighborhood woke up: Knitting collective action in disadvantaged areas amid the 2019 Chilean uprising.
Peace and Conflict: Journal of Peace Psychology, Vol 30(1), Feb 2024, 117-127; doi:10.1037/pac0000706October 2019 saw the birth of the largest wave of demonstrations to hit Chile in the last 50 years. Protesters, the length of the country, soon joined in, voicing a broad range of demands and driving what has been described as a true “awakening” at the local level. This local dimension of the protests—that is, the events that took place at the neighborhood level—has been overlooked by recent studies of the conflicts that erupted in major cities across Chile and the nationwide demands that came with them. However, ma...

What exactly is a hate crime in the United States (US)? A review of hate crime in five US cities
Anita Kalunta-Crumpton Safer Communities, Vol. ahead-of-print, No. ahead-of-print, pp.- The paper aims to provide a critical review of how variations in the conceptualization and contextualization of hate crime across US cities might impact how their individual law enforcement agencies collect hate crime data. Media reports and political discourses present hate crime as a prevalent problem in the USA. Punishing Women for Miscarriage: The role of Political Orientation and Hostile Sexism
AbstractWomen ’s reproductive autonomy is an ideologically divisive issue, and this divisiveness goes beyond just attitudes toward abortion to include other outcomes such as miscarriage. Previous research has established that hostile sexism is positively associated with punitive attitudes toward pregnant women who flout conventional pregnancy proscriptions. Across three studies (N1 = 296;N2 = 580,N3 = 308) we conceptually replicated this research while shifting the focus from abstract attitudes to concrete policies punishing women for miscarriage, and moving beyond hostile sexism to examine the role of politi...

This commentary aims to highlight the need and importance of identity documents in paving the path toward civil and political participation for the said population group. It also focusses attention on mechanisms of action that have been ...

News at a glance: Jailed conservationists freed, physics titan dies, and diversity in anatomical illustrations
ASTRONOMY Scientists flock to the eclipse Tens of millions in North America turned their specially protected eyes to the skies on 8 April for several minutes of darkness when the Moon blocked the disk of the Sun, casting a shadow across Mexico, 15 U.S. states, and Canada. Researchers and citizen scientists seized the opportunity to study the corona—the wispy, outer layer of the Sun’s atmosphere—from the ground and in eclipse-chasing aircraft. They expected to see loops of plasma and other solar flares because the eclipse coincided with solar maximum, a period of high magnetic activity. Research...
