Surgical Electricity Used to Molecularly Reshape Tissues
Researchers at the University of California, Irvine and Occidental College have identified and are studying a new way performing surgery using electricity. Some tissues, such as the ears, cornea, and joints, have a collagen-rich extracellular matrix that can be manipulated using an electric current. The idea is that if you deform a piece of tissue, such as bending an ear, and apply an electric current through the deformed area, the stress within the tissue is released. The ear will now stay bent, and the effect seems to be permanent. The researchers have been doing this to rabbit ears and have been perfecting the technique...

Electronic Wound Monitoring Bandage Tracks Lactate, Oxygen Levels
Healing large and complex wounds requires vigilant monitoring and frequent dressing changes. This generally means pain, might require general anesthesia, and can even be emotionally disturbing to patients. A less invasive method of wound monitoring, that lets the wounds remain undisturbed, is badly needed. As wounds heal, the chemical composition of their environment changes. A couple of the chemicals whose concentrations vary around the wound are lactate and oxygen, so they can serve as biomarkers of wound healing. Researchers at Binghamton University have now developed a flexible electronic sensor, which looks like a ban...

Electrospinning Gun Protects Wounds with Nanofiber Mesh
An Israeli company called Nanomedic has begun showing off its impressive device for applying an electrospun material to the surface of wounds. Electrospinning involves using electricity to produce extremely fine polymer threads. This technology is almost always used during manufacturing. The SpinCare product is the first portable electrospinning device and it can lay down a thin bed of nano-scale fibers over the entire surface of a wound. The material protects the wound while working as a medium, mimicking the extra cellular matrix, within which healing can take place and cells proliferate. The fibers themselves can be inf...

Device Helps Make Incisions Along Skin Tension Lines to Reduce Scarring
Surgeons working on delicate areas and visible areas of the body, particularly in plastic and cosmetic surgery, have to keep in mind the direction of skin tension lines. These are formed by collagen fibers that are aligned within the dermis of the skin. If incisions are made against the grain, more visible scars will be a result. Sometimes it’s hard to tell the direction of skin tension lines, so there are printed surface maps that are used, but individual patients may have their tension lines grow differently than in most people.  There are also devices that can estimate the direction of these lines, but these requ...

Handheld Skin Bioprinter Heals Deep Open Wounds With Patient ’s Own Cells
The human organism has a number of physiologic processes that work together to heal skin wounds. Sometimes wounds are so large and difficult that these healing mechanisms simply can’t access damaged tissues. Researchers at Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine in North Carolina are now reporting the development of a bioprinter that uses a patient’s own skin cells to heal wounds faster and more consistently. The device is loaded with dermal fibroblasts and epidermal keratinocytes harvested and grown from the patient’s own skin. A scan is performed of the wound, which provides a three-dimensional...

Thinking about rhinoplasty?
A rhinoplasty, or nose job, is surgery performed to alter the way your nose functions and looks. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, nearly 220,000 rhinoplasties are performed yearly, making this the most common facial plastic surgery procedure. Rhinoplasty can simultaneously help you improve breathing and achieve a more balanced appearance. Is rhinoplasty right for me? A common medical reason for rhinoplasty is difficulty breathing through the nose. Nasal obstruction can cause problems with exercise, disturb sleep, contribute to snoring and sleep apnea, or interfere with other activities. If medical tre...

Digital Thermography and Machine Learning Team Up to Improve Burn Wound Care
A team at McGill University in Canada and the Universidad Autonoma de San Luis Potosi in Mexico have developed a system for analyzing thermographic scans of burn wounds to improve how they are analyzed and how patients are treated. The team used digital infrared thermography, a non-invasive imaging technique, to study wounds when they were presented and for the following few days afterward. Infrared thermography shows the heat signature of the tissues being observed, which can indicate a variety of underlying processes taking place, particularly the amount of blood perfusion below the surface. “Digital infrared thermog...

Elevo Kit Snoring Intervention Device Cleared in United States
Cook Medical and Zelegent, a company out of La Jolla, California, announced that the FDA cleared the Elevo Kit Snoring Intervention Device. The Elevo is used to position special sutures so as to lift the soft palate, the rear roof of the mouth. Alexander K. Arrow, MD, the CEO of Zelegent, which developed the Elevo, likens the procedure to a facelift, but for the soft palate. Cook Medical will be leading the distribution efforts. Zelegent has named the procedure “elevoplasty,” which can be performed under local anesthesia in the physician’s office. Three bi-directional resorbable barbed sutures are deliver...
