Weekly Overseas Health IT Links –10th September, 2022.
This article is adapted fromVoices in the Code: A Story About People, Their Values, and the Algorithm They Made, out Sept. 8 from Russell Sage Foundation Press. In May 2021, I got a call I never expected. I was working on abook about A.I. ethics, focused on the algorithm that gives out kidneys to transplant patients in the United States. Darren Stewart —a data scientist from UNOS, the nonprofit that runs the kidney allocation process—was calling to get my take: How many decimal places should they include when calculating each patient’s allocation score? The score is an incredibly important number, given it determines w...

Tough Ultrasound-Controlled Bioadhesives
Scientists from McGill University in Canada created a technique of using ultrasound-mediated cavitation to make bioadhesives better stick to body’s tissues, including wet surfaces that are typically challenging for such materials. The new method involves ultrasound to create microbubbles within the adhesive. The bubbles burst, which then temporarily forces some of the adhesive components deeper into the underlying tissue, helping to create a stronger bond. The hydrogel adhesives are made using poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) or polyacrylamide combined with alginate, and also contain chitosan or gelatin nanopar...

The New Zealand health system in crisis: We need to look after our clinicians
I lay on an examination table while a plastic surgeon surveyed my skin to determine if a suspicious mole should be excised. I joked with him that I had once considered plastic surgery as a career. I knew he still worked at the hospital and fired a rhetorical question at him, enquiring if the hospital Read more… The New Zealand health system in crisis: We need to look after our clinicians originally appeared in KevinMD.com. Artificial Skin Senses Pressure, Temperature, Humidity
Researchers at Graz University in Austria have created an artificial skin that is more sensitive than your fingertip. The skin contains 2,000 sensors per square millimeter, and the researchers designed it to sense humidity, temperature, and pressure, just like human skin. The tiny sensors within the skin material consist of a hydrogel core and a piezoelectric zinc oxide shell. The hydrogel expands or contracts depending on the temperature and also when it absorbs moisture. Pressure can also affect the zinc oxide shell, and these changes lead to an electrical charge, forming the basis of the sensing technology. The material...

When AI Meets the Transgender Community
Matthew FeeneyCredit: Os KeyesAnyone who has been paying attention to politics in the last year or so will know that across the country there have been an increasing number of public policy fights surrounding the transgender community. Perhaps the most notable are debates on rules governing who should be able to compete in women ’s and girl’s sporting events or access gender‐segregated bathrooms. Others include debates on “Don’t Say ‘Gay’ ” bills. What is less often discussed is how recognition technology fueled by Artificial Intelligence (AI) will affect members of the transgender community. As this te...

Catheter-Deliverable Biomaterial Sealants: Interview with Natalie Artzi, Co-founder of BioDevek
BioDevek, a medtech company based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, has developed a biomaterial adhesive that acts to seal internal wounds and incisions. The material is designed to be sprayed through a catheter, and the primary application for the technology so far is to act as a sealant following colonic polyp resection. At present, following polyp resection, surgeons can use polyp clips to seal the resection site, which can hamper wound healing, or use no sealant at all, leading to an open wound that comes with a risk of bleeding or other complications. This can lead to additional surgeries to correct the issue and is inc...

Laser Kills Multidrug-Resistant Bacteria for Wound and Blood Decontamination
Scientists at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis have developed an ultrashort-pulse laser that can kill multidrug-resistant bacteria and their spores, and without damaging human cells. The laser works by vibrating and breaking protein structures within the bacterial cell, resulting in biochemical disruption and eventual death. The researchers hope that the technique could prove useful in decontaminating wounds and blood products. Killing multidrug-resistant bacteria is no mean feat, as many of the common antibiotics we use are no longer effective against them. General antibacterial strategies that cou...

Voxel-Based Technique to Streamline Bioprinting
At the University of Virginia researchers developed a new bioprinting technique based on voxels. Voxels are 3D cubes that form basic building blocks in computer graphics, similar to what pixels are for 2D, and have been popularized by games such as Minecraft. The new technique involves printing discrete spherical blobs of bioink (as the voxels) within a supportive matrix that then swell to merge together, forming a porous structure. Sticky bioinks can be difficult to handle and print predictably, but this new technique helps to address this issue.     Bioprinting holds enormous promise as a method to 3D print new tis...
