The Telling Absence of “Buy American” Mandates
Scott LincicomeIn announcing his $2 trillion infrastructure* plan yesterday, President Joe Bidenpromised that it would feature a hefty dose of Buy American protectionism:When we make all of these investments we ’re going to make sure, as the Executive Order I signed early on, that we buy American. That means investing in an American based companies and American workers. Not a contract will go out that I control that will not go to a company that is an American company with American products all the way down the line, and American workers. And we ’ll buy the goods we need from all of America.Cat...

Rheumatic fever : Dr Jones would smile if we get rid of the “ supportive criteria ”
Dr. Duckett Jones, the famed American physician, from Good Samaritan hospital, Boston would be a proud man in heaven, to find his criteria still being celebrated all over the globe. He will also be pleased to know his home country USA  is painted green on the world RHD map due to his untiring efforts that began in 1944. Of course, what the rest of the world has done in the last century has left us wanting (including the WHO).   Global RHD map. Note the red and brown shading in south Asia and Africa. It is obvious, RHD is more about economics, equality, and poverty, rather than aggression from an otherwise innocuous...

Fully vaccinated against COVID-19? So, what can you safely do?
Congrats on getting your COVID-19 vaccine! You qualify as fully vaccinated two weeks after your second dose of the Moderna or Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine, or two weeks after your single dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Maybe you’re wondering what you can safely do now that you’re fully vaccinated. As an infectious disease specialist, I’ve provided answers to some common questions. Please keep in mind that information about COVID-19 and vaccines is evolving, and recommendations may change as we learn more. Can I gather with people outside my h...

Starting a new life
I ' m getting the second shot of the Pfizer vaccine this morning. CDC says to wait two weeks until I assume I ' m fully protected but I expect that ' s being over-conservative. Anyway, it will mean real freedom for me. However, the ending of mitigation measures all over the country is premature. Yes, most of the most vulnerable people -- not all of them -- are now protected against serious disease, but we have seen that many young people end up with long term suffering and disability, even after a very mild acute course. Now is not the time to pretend this is over. Irresponsible Journalism Only Makes it More Difficult to Reach Herd Immunity
Jeffrey A. SingerIn the past few days I have come across two news headlines that only serve to fan the flames of fear, and work against physicians ’ efforts to persuade skeptical people to get vaccinated against COVID-19.The first example came on March 16, in a San Jose Mercury News headline blurting out: “3 Hawaii Residents Fully Vaccinated Against COVID19 Are Infected With The Coronavirus. ” The story referred to these three cases as “breakthrough” cases and noted that one of them was a fully ‐vaccinated health care worker who had visited multiple cities on the U.S. mainland and tested posit...

GoodRx Upends Healthcare Price Obfuscation
As Dr. Elisabeth Rosenthal told NPR in 2017 (listen to or read the interview athttps://n.pr/2OgsDMt -- it was fascinating), Americans are told over and over again that they need to be  good consumers of healthcare services. But she explained that in order to be a good consumer, you need to know a price. Healthcare in the U.S. is one of the few markets in which no one can tell the consumer what the prices for their services actually are. (And she added " P.S., a lot of medicine isn ' t so elective. Your doctor says hey, you need to have your hip replaced. Or your doctor says, I ' m going to fill out a requisition for t...

The great COVID vaccine rollout of 2021 is fully underway. My COVID-19 vaccine story –– and what happened next
Like most healthcare workers, I was thrilled when I was eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. I’ve been involved in COVID-19 patient care since the very start of the pandemic in the US, and I had seen what this virus can do to people. We all felt incredibly helpless against this incredibly contagious bug. With time, experience, and study, we’ve learned which treatments help and which don’t. Even more importantly, we now have vaccines. The Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna mRNA vaccines — tested in about 18,600 and 15,000 participants, respectively — were the first available in the US via emergency FDA authorization...

I got shot
Specifically, I got the first shot of the Pfizer/Biontech mRNA vaccine yesterday. The needle was so thin I didn ' t even feel it. (Bill Gates must have made those microchips incredibly small. It ' s actually somewhat comforting to know he ' s tracking me.)Anyway, I had no side effects at all, not even the dread pain at the injection site. So when you get the chance, go for it. I know people are having to wait until their age category becomes eligible and even then it ' s hard to get an appointment, but it will open up. Keep trying. We need everybody to do this, for the sake of everyone else. (Source: Stayin' Alive)

Moderna ’s “Secret Sauce”
By MIKE MAGEE This week J&J gained FDA approval for their 1-shot COVID vaccine, leading optimists like Pfizer Board member, Scott Gottlieb, to predict that we will have 100 million shots out there by the end of April, and on-demand offerings for the general public. In the race toward herd immunity, we could easily ignore a revolutionary change in pharmaceutical design and manufacturing occurring under our noses. Case in point: Moderna – subject of a recent case study by Marco Iansiti, Karim Lakhani, Hannah Mayer, and Kerry Herman in the Harvard Business Review. Moderna – labeled by its CEO as “a technolo...
