Using deep learning with CT helps predict hip fractures
A deep-learning model that includes digital x-rays reconstructed from 3D hip CT images shows promise for predicting subsequent fractures in patients with a relatively recent hip break, researchers have found. The findings could improve how clinicians care for their patients, wrote a team led by doctoral candidate Yisak Kim of Seoul National University Graduate School in South Korea. The group's findings were published January 30 in Radiology. "Developing a prediction model for short-term subsequent fracture risk is important because it would identify patients at the highest risk and aid in determining appropriate treatme...

Lithium treatment may promote bone health in women with bipolar disorder
Women taking lithium for bipolar disorder had greater bone mineral density on dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) exams compared to women with bipolar disorder not taking the medication, according to a recent study. The finding reinforces the role of lithium as a first-line therapy, with recent research suggesting that patients with bipolar disorder are disproportionately affected by osteoporosis and have an increased risk of fracture, noted first author Lana Williams, PhD, of Deakin University in Victoria, Australia, and colleagues.“Both the condition and the medications used to treat it, for example, antipsychotics ...

High body fat raises fracture risk in women treated for breast cancer
Women with high body fat undergoing early breast cancer treatment may be at higher risk for vertebral fractures, despite the use of bone health drugs, according to a study published January 10 in JAMA Network Open. In a study of patients who received aromatase inhibitors and denosumab over four years, dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scans showed that high baseline fat body mass was independently associated with vertebral fractures after 18 months, wrote lead author Deborah Cosentini, MD, of the University of Brescia in Italy, and colleagues. “These findings suggest that fat body mass may promote skeletal fragil...
