Yet to Be Charted: Lymphatic System in Health and Disease (Day 2)
NIH is hosting a research workshop in September to help us better understand how the lymphatic system develops and functions in sickness and in health. The workshop aims to improve how we manage and treat lymphatic disorders. Hosted by the NHLBI and the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) in coordination with the Trans-NIH Lymphatic Coordinating Committee, the workshop will bring together basic, clinical, and translational scientists, along with members of the lymphatics community, to explore the latest advances in the field and share research progress. International experts will discu...

Advancing Research on Emotional Well-Being and Regulation of Eating
Given the rising levels of global stress, worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic, loneliness and mental health problems are on the rise, adding to the burden of chronic diseases. Most health-oriented research takes a harm-reduction approach, i.e., identifying and mitigating problems to reduce disease burden. Understanding and promoting emotional well-being (EWB) may yield another important strategy to accomplish this and significantly improve people ’ s health. Little has been known about how to best increase EWB in ways that also improve health.Dr. Epel is principal investigator of a new research network to develop resources...

NIH Obesity Research Task Force Spring Seminar: Moving beyond BMI: Exploring the Heterogeneity of Obesity
Obesity is a chronic disease with deleterious effects on health and well-being, but BMI is an imperfect proxy for health risk. This symposium, hosted by the NIH Obesity Research Task Force and presented by renowned extramural investigators, will explore the heterogeneity of obesity, including risk for its development and complications, pathophysiology, and response to treatment, as well as implications for implementing obesity prevention and treatments.Air date: 5/5/2022 1:00:00 PM (Source: Videocast - All Events)

Should Older Adults with Diabetes and Obesity Lose Weight?
This is the annual Robert S. Gordon Jr. Lecture, part of the Wednesday Afternoon Lecture Series and sponsored by NIH Office of Disease Prevention (ODP). Rena Wing's research focuses on behavioral treatment of obesity and addresses the following questions: 1. What are the health benefits of modest weight loss? 2. How can we improve behavioral treatment of obesity? 3. Is it possible to prevent weight gain and subsequent obesity? 4. What are the characteristics of successful weight loss maintainers? For more information go tohttps://oir.nih.gov/walsAir date: 5/18/2022 3:00:00 PM (Source: Videocast - All Events)

“ Engineered extracellular matrix models to study tumor heterogeneity ”
The development, progression, and therapy response of cancer is determined by the evolution of intratumor heterogeneity. How extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling regulates the phenotypic diversity of tumor and stromal cells and which consequences these changes have on malignancy, however, remains poorly understood. Increasing knowledge of these connections is critical as aberrant ECM remodeling often precedes tumor development (e.g. during obesity), regulates many different hallmarks of cancer including proliferation, metabolism, and angiogenesis, and can be used to diagnose and treat cancer more effectively. Studying the...
