The Macro View – Health, Financial And Political News Relevant To E-Health And The Health Sector In General.
December 07, 2017 Edition. Two huge things are going on around the Trump Administration at present. First Michael Flynn – his recent short lived National Security Adviser has pleaded guilty to misleading the FBI on his dealings with Russia sucking other members of the Administration closer to the flame. This could all go very badly. Secondly the Senate Tax Cut Bill has be passed and lead to s pectacular changes in the US Tax code if reconciled with the House Bill. It is suggested this might also lead to all sorts of problems and that it will be unimaginably expensive. We shall see. And as a wild card late in the week ...

The Macro View – Health, Financial And Political News Relevant To E-Health And The Health Sector In General.
November 30, 2017 Edition.Overseas, in the week this is published we will get a good idea if Trump is going to get the Tax Legislation he wants through. There are many differences between the House and Senate versions and it will be interesting to see if they can be reconciled. Current betting is that something will get through but won ’t look much like what the President was hoping for!In Europe the Irish Government has almost collapsed so that is going to complexify Brexit negotiations! Germany is also still without a Government! In Asia the problems in Myanmar continue and elsewhere the Argentinians seems to have lost ...

Ethnic Cleansing vs. Genocide: The Politics Behind Labeling the Rohingya Crisis
On November 22, aftersome reluctance, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson joined theUnited Nations andUnited Kingdom in calling the current Rohingya crisis an “ethnic cleansing. ” Holding Myanmar’s military, security forces, and local vigilantes responsible for the crisis, Tillerson stated that the United Statescould pursueaccountability via targeted sanctions. While some hailed Tillerson ’s label of ethnic cleansingas a start, it ’s worth taking a closer look at the politics behind it. First, ethnic cleansing does not elicit a legal response, whereas the labels of “crimes against humanity” or “genocide” do...

The Macro View – Health, Financial And Political News Relevant To E-Health And The Health Sector In General.
November 23, 2017 Edition.-----Well the Don has come back from Asia proclaiming a brilliant success but with rather less conviction being expressed by most others! The main news this week and for the next week or so will be the attempt to pass some “Tax Reform”. Currently it is hard to know how that will play out but you can be sure the poor are unlikely to be better off after it is done – if it ever is.The main other issue has been a Senate Candidate who seems to be a child molester (9 women so far have complained) but he still thinks h e can elected! He is hoping to outTrump Trump! In the rest of the world things are...

Prior Presidents ’ “Travel Bans” Are Different From President Trump’s Ban
President Trump ’stravel ban Proclamation that bans immigration and travel from seven countries (and limits it from an eighth) is based on authority in immigration law that other presidents have used. But all but one of these bans were quite different from President Trump ’s. They banned at most a few thousand—almost always specifically named—individuals based on their personal conduct, not their nationality. In the one exception, not all nationals were banned, and the requirements to end the ban were very clear. Neither of which can be said for the Trump ban.Different in ScaleNo president has attempted to ban as m...

The Hydra-Headed Drug Business
With television cameras rolling and Attorney General Jeff Sessions on hand in San Diego, the Coast Guardannounced late last month that it had set a new record for cocaine seizures at sea —more than 455,000 pounds through September 11, topping last year’s record.  At last we ’ve turned the corner in the war on drugs. Right? Don ’t bet on it. When Americans read about ever-larger drug busts, or when we watch television shows about drug enforcement, we get the impression that drug enforcement agents are clever and innovative, always staying one step ahead of the sinister pushers. But in reality the drug distribut...

Travel Ban Is Based on Executive Whim, Not Objective Criteria
ConclusionFor countries on the list, and for any country wishing to remain off the list, it is vitally important that they understand which factors led to their inclusion or exclusion. If the United States is acting in good faith —seeking to change behavior as opposed to looking for an excuse to ban people—its criteria should be clearly explained and understood. The Iran nuclear deal, for example, hasvery precise requirements for Iran to avoid sanctions, down to the exact percentage of purity for its enriched uranium. This is very far from the case here.No consistent combination of factors or mitigating factors trigger...

Addressing The Gap In Noncommunicable Disease Data With Technology And Innovation
High-quality health data is the backbone of strong public health policies. When government officials and public health professionals understand the factors that influence health, they can make informed decisions about how and where to target public health interventions and resources.  In low- and middle-income countries, noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) account for 67 percent of deaths but only 1 percent of global health funding (see page 5). As the NCD epidemic reaches all countries—regardless of income level, high-quality, quickly accessible data that provide information about NCD risk factors are the lever for action....

Burma in the Twilight between Democracy and Dictatorship
A half century of military dictatorship has officially ended in Burma, or Myanmar. Yet taking the final steps toward democracy may be as difficult as making the transition so far. It long seemed like this day would never come. But six years ago the military regime transformed itself into a nominally civilian administration. Suu Kyi, now a Nobel laureate, was released from house arrest. Free elections were held last November, in which the NLD won an overwhelming victory. The new government has taken over. Suu Kyi was barred from the presidency by a constitutional provision drafted specifically against her. However, she chos...

China Needs a Foreign Policy which Makes Friends
Rising powers tend to be cocky and pushy. They believe their time has arrived and they want their just deserts—now. So it is with China. Alas, there’s a downside, which Beijing has discovered. Rising powers don’t make many friends. If you listen to the debate on the U.S. presidential campaign trail—not recommended for the faint-hearted!—you’d think America was a helpless Third World state, besieged by enemies deploying vast armies and armadas. The truth is, the United States dominates the globe. Among its advantages is being allied with every major industrialized state, save China and Russia, and is friendly w...

When Should Courts Defer to White-Collar Prosecution Settlements?
Deferred prosecution agreements and their close relatives non-prosecution agreements (DPAs/NPAs) have become a major tool of white-collar prosecution in recent years. Typically, a business defendant in exchange for escape from the costs and perils of trial agrees to some combination of cash payment, non-monetary steps such as a shakeup of its board or manager training, and submission to future oversight by DoJ or other monitors. Not unlike plea bargains in more conventional criminal prosecution, these deals dispense with the high cost of a trial; they also dispense with the need for the government to prove its allegations...

“The lifeline in the northwest corner of China’s Yunnan...
"The lifeline in the northwest corner of China's Yunnan Province is the Dulong River, which begins on the Tibetan plateau and flows through the Dulong River Valley into Myanmar. The Dulong River Valley — a sliver of land on China's eastern rim of the Himalayas — is home to almost all of China's 7,000 ethnic Dulong, or Drung, one of the smallest of its 56 official national ethnic groups. With no paved roads leading out of the nearby villages in Myanmar's Kachin State, ethnic Dulong walk into the valley to sell herbs and vegetables. But things are changing in the valley, where the Chinese government has been building new...

North Korea Ignores “the World” Yet Again
Yet again North Korea has angered “the world.” Pyongyang violated another United Nations ban, launching a satellite into orbit. Washington is leading the campaign to sanction the North. Announced UN Ambassador Samantha Power: “The accelerated development of North Korea’s nuclear and ballistic missile program poses a serious threat to international peace and security—to the peace and security not just of North Korea’s neighbors, but the peace and security of the entire world.” The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea is a bad actor. No one should welcome further enhancements to the DPRK’s weapons arsenal....

“Dragging logs up and down the hillsides of sweltering...
"Dragging logs up and down the hillsides of sweltering jungles is a tough job. But there's something worse for Myanmar's logging #elephants: unemployment. In a country where the most basic social protections were absent under years of dictatorship, elephant labor laws were largely respected. But now, shrinking forests and a law that prohibits the export of raw timber have saddled the country with an elephant unemployment crisis. For the animals, which experts say have been known to display a sense of purpose in their work, the loss of a job can be demoralizing. "They are getting fat," said U Chit Sein, 64, whose 8 elephant...
