"The lifeline in the northwest corner of China's Yunnan Province is the Dulong River, which begins on the Tibetan plateau and flows through the Dulong River Valley into Myanmar. The Dulong River Valley — a sliver of land on China's eastern rim of the Himalayas — is home to almost all of China's 7,000 ethnic Dulong, or Drung, one of the smallest of its 56 official national ethnic groups. With no paved roads leading out of the nearby villages in Myanmar's Kachin State, ethnic Dulong walk into the valley to sell herbs and vegetables. But things are changing in the valley, where the Chinese government has been building new roads, expanding telecommunications and encouraging commercial ventures to alleviate poverty.
