Roast Cauliflower with Vadouvan Butter
In the “How did I not know about this before?” category, allow me to introduce you to vadouvan, a delicious Indo-French curry spice mix that will blow your taste buds and your mind. Thanks to bro Joe for turning me on to vadouvan, though the real credit goes to the French colonists in seventeenth century Pundicherry, India who created the spice mix as they blended French and Indian cuisines. Vadouvan is complex and piquant but milder than traditional curry, and a truly exotic treat for your taste buds. Joe learned about Vadouvan from his buddy Mourad, the modern Moroccan chef whose book Mourad-New Moroccan ...

Chemicals and Pregnant Women: Taking Care of Your Unborn Baby
This study is not a warning of a scary new epidemic of problems arriving with next year’s babies. Instead, it’s a peak behind the curtain at what might be the hidden story behind the marvelous kids we already see on today’s playgrounds across the country. Most are very healthy – among the healthiest kids in history. Yes, too many are overweight. Too many have asthma. Too many have allergies. Too many have learning problems. Too many start puberty early. More than half have some chronic illness. But this isn’t slowing kids down as much as the devastating infectious diseases of the past. It is a vib...

Healthy Low-Carb Barbecue Sauce
Here’s a recipe for a Low-Carb Barbecue Sauce I modified slightly from the original I shared in the Wheat Belly 30-Minute Cookbook. You may have noticed that nearly all commercial barbecue sauces at the supermarket contain high-fructose corn syrup, corn syrup, or sugar as primary ingredients, converting your tasty barbecued ribs or chicken into a toxic sugar exposure. This low-carb version yields 8 grams net carbs per 1/4 cup due to the carbs from tomatoes and the bit of molasses. (The molasses is optional, but does add some extra depth of flavor.) Spread on ribs, chicken, or burgers that contain zero carbs, and you...

“A masala is simply a mixture of ground #spices. Each...
"A masala is simply a mixture of ground #spices. Each state in India has its own blend, and there are countless variations of each. Sambhar masala — a blend of curry leaves, chiles, yellow split peas, fenugreek, cinnamon, coriander, cumin and poppy and mustard seeds — is one of thousands of versions of a spice mix from southern #India. The trickiest part about making your own is getting the 8 spices, yellow split peas and fresh curry leaves called for in the recipe. While on #nytassignment for @nytfood, the photographer @melinahammer took this picture of #sambharmasala ingredients before they were ground. Visit the lin...

Allison says… I have a question about bath soaks. I’ve heard a lot of buzz about mustard seed baths, epson salt baths, Dead Sea mineral baths, etc. Can taking a bath with any of these ingredients really help with detoxing your skin or absorbing nutrients? Thanks for the question Allison first of all let’s get one thing clear: taking a bath in anything is not going to detox your body. That’s because your body doesn’t cleanse itself of to...

Turning “Why me?” into “Why not me?”
An excerpt from How to Live Well with Chronic Pain and Illness: A Mindful Guide. Copyright 2015 by Toni Bernhard. Excerpted with permission from Wisdom Publications. “Freedom is instantaneous the moment we accept the way things are.” – Karen Maezen Miller A well-known Buddhist story known as the Mustard Seed helped me learn that continually asking “Why Me?” was an unrealistic assessment of the human condition that had become an ongoing source of suffering for me. In the Mustard Seed story, Kisa Gotami was a young mother who refused to believe that her young son had died. She carried him door-to-door ...

Appetizers for Summer Book Club
As much as I love book club, I love hosting it even more. Because hosting means I get to leave work early and do my favorite thing in the whole world – spend the late afternoon in my kitchen. I’m rarely at home at that time of day, when something wonderful happens to the light in our apartment as the sun begins to peek out from behind the tall apartment towers just south of us, and pours into my kitchen.  Add in NPR or a good book on tape and I’m in heaven. The evening promised good weather, so we planned to meet on the roof.  I took my cue for the menu from the book we were discussing – “...

Receiving the wild heart of medicine : Earth
This is the third in a series of posts engaging with the five elemental phases in a visceral, symbolic way. You can find the post on the wood phase element by clicking here, and the post on the fire element by clicking here. With each of these posts, I catch myself wanting to start by saying how special the current element is, how different from the others! It’s true, each one is incredibly distinct, a separate universe. What does water know of fire, or fire of water? Yes, each is special–just as special as everybody else. Each a perfect child in the eyes of all-embracing mother earth. Earth is simple–so glor...
