Study finds non-narcotic nerve block controls children's pain, shortens hospital stays
A new study has found an effective way to control pain following minimally invasive surgery to correct a congenital condition called pectus excavatum. Children are sent home with catheters that infuse a non-narcotic nerve-blocking drug called a paravertebral blockade. Use of the blocks shortens hospital stays and reduces opioid use after surgery. Minimally Invasive Surgery in Neonatal Patients: A Review
Laparoscopic and thoracoscopic surgery have gradually become accepted diagnostic and therapeutic modalities in the management of neonatal surgical conditions. In the hands of experienced surgeons, minimally invasive surgery (MIS) has reduced the need for open procedures. In children younger than 1 year, the advantages of MIS are evident in avoiding the sequelae of open surgery. MIS has shown outcomes comparable to those with open surgery. The recent literature in the PubMed database was reviewed, using the keywords "minimally invasive surgery," "neonatology," "pediatric surgery," "laparoscopy," and "thoracoscopy." The revi...

The 'Pinhole' Cancer Treatment You've Probably Never Heard of
Imagine an exquisitely precise cancer therapy procedure done through a small opening in the body that can: Kill tumor cells, shrink tumors, or regrow the healthy part of a cancerous organ. Deliver chemotherapy or radiation directly to the cancer site. Usually be done as an outpatient procedure with fewer side effects than conventional treatments like chemotherapy. Potentially treat many types of cancer, either alone or combined with other therapies. Sounds too good to be true, right? Not necessarily, since this type of therapy, called interventional oncology, is now being performed hundreds of times every day by sp...

Stem cells used to repair children's eyes after cataracts
ConclusionThis is an exciting study, which shows that a new technique may be a much better alternative for treating babies born with congenital cataracts. It also suggests new ways for scientists to look at tissue regeneration from stem cells in the future. We now need to see the study repeated on a larger scale, to see if the initial results can be replicated. Only 12 children were treated with the new technique in this study, which is a very small set of results to rely on. We also need to see long-term follow up on these children, to find out how long the regenerated lenses continue to be free from cataracts. The suggest...
