Provisional Patents
Sitting on a couple of waitlists and want to send updates soon. I've been working on an engineering project for the past year and am in the middle of applying for a provisional (utility) patent for a medical device. I understand that, if granted, this obviously isn't as significant as a non-provisional patent. But would it still be worth including on an update letter? Have seen mixed opinions (comparing them to submitted papers vs accepted ones) in previous year threads. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Would you continue working if you won the lottery?
Was talking to an orthopod recently, he had been involved in the development of a medical device and receives a massive check every year from royalties for it. He no longer needs to work to live comfortably. But he continues to work a ton, see patients, and operate all day, because he absolutely loves his job and loves helping his patients. Was curious if onc folks on here feel the same way about their work? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Looking for gap year advice, ORM engineering student with interest in medical devices/innovation
Hi everyone, I'm nervous to post on here because I know that my stats right now are very poor. This is exactly why I am taking a gap year (more than likely 2 years). I really just need guidance on what I should do during this year to improve my application. I am an undergrad (graduating spring 2024), majoring in biomedical engineering and minoring in business at a T25 university. My current gpa is around a 3.17, and at most I will be able to graduate with a 3.2-something. I really messed... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

VMD/MBA and DVM/MBA
Hello, Has anyone considered or completed an MBA with a vet degree? I am specifically looking at the program offered through Penn. I understand that this program is NOT geared toward running a practice. If I were to complete the program, I would be more interested in a finance position for veterinary medical devices or pharmaceuticals, life-science venture capital, or hospital administration. Is anyone else considering this particular dual-degree track? Has anyone gone on to do it? Is... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

They Lost Their Legs. Doctors and Health Care Giants Profited.
Medical device makers have bankrolled a cottage industry of doctors and clinics that perform artery-clearing procedures that can lead to amputations. www.nytimes.com I wondered why vascular surgery all of a sudden became one of the most coveted specialties for hospitals in the last 3-4 years. The stuff in this article is crazy. Sounds like some of these vascular guys were making 10k per atherectomy, which can be done w simple moderate sedation or maybe just local in some cases. “From 2017 to 2021, about half... Kaiser (Full CoA) vs Upitt
Very happy to have such a hard choice to make. A bit about me and my priorities- at this point in time I see myself doing family medicine in the future through the DPC model, if for some reason I couldn't practice FM this way, I think it would be very possible for me to change my intended specialty during medical school. Not only that but I have an enormous interest in entrepreneurship in the form of something like starting a medical device company, this goes hand in hand with my interest...
