When there's a fine line between BPD and Bipolar?
Just curious as to how you tell the difference if someone is displaying possible signs of both? I recently caught up on an old talk show episode (not going to say which one, because I don't want anybody commenting on a specific case) and one of the guests they had on I found really interesting to watch, because on the way hand I was getting major BPD vibes from her, but then on the other hand there was also a lot of stuff that might have been observed as being part of a Bipolar disorder... If I score a 528 on the MCAT but my GPA is 3.1...
This is a serious question. I suffered from bipolar disorder (it was diagnosed about a year after I finished college) during college and could not get the GPA I wanted. I took the proper medication and now my psychiatrist has said I no longer need any medication. With the ability to think straight, I think I might be able to score a 528 (or close to it) on the MCAT. My concern is that an admissions committee might question why there is such a disparity between my GPA and MCAT score, and... If I score a 528 on the MCAT but my GPA is 3.1... I'm a med student with bipolar disorder - ask me anything.
Inspired by some recent reddit lurking to make an "AMA" style thread (no pun intended.... ). Just bored at the moment and feel like I might have some insight to offer on the disease itself & on being a med student with a mental illness. Ask away if you care to! (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Distinguishing delusional disorder from bipolar in my patient
I'm having a bit of a hard time figuring out what my patient's diagnosis is, are there any pro-tips on how to nail diagnosis of delusional disorder? My patient holds grandiose/persecutory delusions, he does not quite meet criteria for bipolar 1 (+ for insomnia, grandiosity and increase in goal-directed activity) though it is possible that a 4th criteria may have been met previous to his admission. My issue is that I'm not really seeing any major mood symptoms, he is calm and collected... Distinguishing delusional disorder from bipolar in my patient (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Inquiring about bipolar d/o...
I'm an intern who has seen quite a few patients in the ED who report having bipolar d/o. If they are acutely manic it's very clear, but if not, often when I ask them about it, the say that "yeah, my doctor thinks I have that because I'm really moody." Anyway, I was wondering how you address the validity of the diagnosis? What phrases do you use to screen for true mania? I often say something like "have you ever felt like opposite of depressed, like you were on top of the world?" A TON... Inquiring about bipolar d/o... (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Terrible student + bipolar
Hey everyone, So I've decided I want to go to medical school. However, I suffer from bipolar disorder... I originally went to film school. I ended up with a ton of Fs and Ws while there. I was 19 at the time. I was also put on academic probation for a 1.8 GPA by the end of my sophomore year - by then I was 20. Basically I was struggling with my disorder, and had no idea what was wrong with me, so I hid it from most of my family and friends. During that time I was hospitalized a number... Should med school applicants be required to disclose past psychiatric/psychological issues?
Given that various psychiatric and psychological issues (namely bipolar, chronic depression, drug/alcohol abuse, etc.) become serious, prevalent issues in the field of medicine, should med school applicants be required to disclose such issues (i.e., those that would not already be required to be disclosed as a part of an institutional action or misdemeanor/felony)? Clearly, past instances of these issues present added risk factors for patients that can be avoided by eliminating or reducing...
