Hors d'oeuvres Suitable for the Super Bowl
I ' ve never been a big sports fan, in part, because the ticket prices to attend virtually any professional sporting event is beyond ridiculous. & nbsp;I remember attending my first professional baseball game with my Dad at Fenway Park when I was a kid. & nbsp; That event remains one of the most memorable events I spent with my father when I was growing up. & nbsp; But the prices to attend games like that are now simply out-of-reach for many families, and a lot has to do with the salaries for players, although the leagues can afford that with the costly TV broadcasting rights deals they sign for the games. & nbsp; Its little ...

More Evidence That The Mediterranean Diet Is Healthiest
We’ve known for quite some time that weight loss can reduce the risk of developing insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. However, a healthy diet alone (without weight loss) may also help to reduce risk. In a recent Spanish study (published in the Annals of Internal Medicine), 3,541 men and women ages 55-80 at risk for diabetes were followed for an average of 4.1 years. Those who ate a diet rich in fish, whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and olive oil were less likely to develop diabetes than those following other diets of similar caloric value. This is interesting for a few reasons. First of all, it provides us wit...

Fit Family Challenge 2013: Ten Tips For Fast, Healthy, And Affordable Meals
I’m very excited to be the nutrition coach for the Boys & Girls Clubs’ Fit Family Challenge again this year. In surveying the finalist families, I discovered that the two most important nutrition issues on their minds were cooking speed and food affordability. Far down the list were things like food allergies, weight loss, and nutrition basics. Contrary to popular belief, healthy eating doesn’t have to be expensive. A new study showed that a healthful diet only costs an average of $1.50/day more than an unhealthy diet, and the additional cost is mostly related to the expense of leaner protein sources....

Mediterranean Gorge
By Quinn Phillips People with diabetes — both Type 1 and Type 2 — are often told about the importance of portion size and meal planning. Limiting portion sizes, many sources and studies say, is often the key to weight loss and better health both for people with diabetes and those in the general population. But what if the key to good health isn't limiting portions at each meal, but stuffing yourself for just one meal each day? So suggests a new study, published earlier this month in the journal PLoS ONE. According to an article on the study at Medical Daily, researchers at Linköping University in Sweden so...

The Latest Scare Study: Or Why Eating Meat Does Not Cause Diabetes
This article is summarized here:http://www.medindia.net/news/higher-dietary-acid-load-increases-diabetes-risk-127666-1.htmDr. Weil, who has earned millions promoting his own brand of faddish health advice summarizes it here: http://www.drweil.com/drw/u/WBL02378/Surprise-Diabetes-Threat.htmlI went and read the actual study, which you can find in its full form here:Dietary acid load and risk of type 2 diabetes: the E3N-EPICcohort studyHere's my take on it:I am always very suspicious of the findings of any large study that draws its conclusions from questionnaires purporting to measure what people are supposed to have eaten o...

Facing the Fats
By Amy Campbell Fat is a necessary nutrient, and we need it to sustain health. But it's also had its share of hard knocks in the past, and many people (including some dietitians) are still leery about promoting its goodness. In light of the new cholesterol management guidelines from the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology, as well as the FDA's recent proposal to ban trans fat, I decided to write about the different types of fat in our diets this week. I won't get into either of these stories in much detail, but suffice it to say that cholesterol has been in the news big-time recently. New guid...

High triglycerides: Wheat elimination or gemfibrozil?
April posted this question about high triglycerides. High triglycerides are very confusing to many people, often even ignored by many of my colleagues. Because she got such lousy advice from her doctor and because the solutions are really SO simple, I thought I’d relate her story with the advice that really works. I had blood work done last week after experiencing some edema in my feet and legs. My non-fasting triglycerides were 600 mg/dl and the doctor wants to put me on gemfibrozil and do a HbA1c to rule out diabetes. I want to try Wheat Belly first before taking the meds. Is that reasonable? He told me I need to ...

Surviving wheat withdrawal
Wheat withdrawal can be unpleasant business. Read the many thousands of comments on this blog describing the physical and emotional turmoil that develops in the first few days of wheat avoidance and you will come to appreciate just how awful it can be. It is important that wheat withdrawal is recognized for what it is, as some people say, “I feel awful. It must mean that I need wheat.” Nope. It is a withdrawal syndrome, a good thing, a transitional phase as your body tries to return to its normal state. Wheat withdrawal has been labeled by different names over the years–”Atkin’s flu,”...

Final June Diabetes News Snippet Post
Jennysaid... The FDA is taking another look at Avandia's relationship to heart disease. http://www.forbes.com/sites/matthewherper/2013/06/04/battleground-fda-how-tomorrows-avandia-panel-could-help-shape-the-future-of-diabetes/But whatever they conclude about whether or not Avandia causes heart attacks, we know that it, like Actos, also weakens the bones over time and makes them prone to fracture, since it converts that stem cells that should become bone cells into baby fat cells. It, like Actos, also raises the chances of experiencing retinal edema--swelling in the blood vessels in your eye that can contribute to blindn...

The Top 10 Things We Should Tell Our Patients About Weight Loss
In conclusion, obesity underlies most of America’s chronic disease burden but can be reversed with modest weight loss through diet and exercise modifications. Patient adoption of long-term lifestyle changes are challenged by economic factors (e.g. healthy food “deserts” in inner cities), sedentary lifestyles, poor urban planning, excessive fast food and sugary beverage consumption, increasing portion sizes, and high tech conveniences that reduce energy expenditure, among other factors. Patients are more likely to begin weight loss programs if recommended to do so by their physician, though studies suggest...

I Do It MY Way
By Jan Chait First, a smile for the day. My 84-year-old mother was visiting and I arranged to have coffee with a local friend of mine who is 86. I got to the coffee shop first and was, with the help of one of the employees, carving out a space for us at the community table. "I'm meeting two octogenarian ladies," I told him. He then began wondering where their country was. I worry about today's youth and hope the little dude never gets diabetes. He might find the knowledge he'll need to duke it out with the big D a bit overwhelming: Perhaps even more difficult than trying to find Octogenaria on a map. How do you treat your ...

Self-Managing Cholesterol
By David Spero As a recent study indicates, reducing LDL (“bad" cholesterol) can help prevent complications in most people with diabetes. Why is LDL cholesterol a bad thing, and how do you get to a healthy level? First, what is cholesterol? Discovered in 1769 by analyzing gallstones, cholesterol is a fat-like organic chemical that is an essential part of animal cell membranes. Without it, cells won't function properly. Cholesterol is made into bile, which is needed for digesting fats. It is also helps produce the body's natural steroids, including our sex hormones and the vital stress hormone cortisol. Cholesterol ...
