New definitions for CKD! Medrants version 1.0
This represents my first attempt at explaining the new CKD definitions.  I invite my readers, especially my loyal renal readers, to suggest modifications.  This rant will become the basis for a regular talk, and I want to get it right.  Thanks in advance for your suggestions.   Ten years after we have new definitions for CKD.  Soon after they established the initial stages, authors began to argue that we should divide stage 3 into 3a and 3b.  Now they have. For those who want to read all the details - KDIGO 2012 Clinical Practice Guideline for the Evaluation and Management of Chronic Kidn...

MassMutual vs College Debt
The ObamaTax placed the administration of student loans under the (benign?) authority of HHS Secretary Shecantbeserious. What student loans and "affordable health care" have to do with each other is anybody's guess, but there you are. Partly as a result of this, student loan debt is at record levels, threatening the future solvency of our best and brightest (among others). MassMutual, about which we lauded their innovative LifeBridge program last Fall, wants to help out:"[S]tudent loans in the U.S. has topped $1 trillion, surpassing both credit card and auto loan debt. The 90-day serious delinquency rate is also higher tha...

Sunny in Malaysia
While it's easy to forget that this is indeed a global economy, sometimes the news has a way of reminding us:"Canada's Sun Life Financial and Malaysian state investor Khazanah have agreed to buy Aviva's Malaysian [life] insurance ... Britain's No.2 insurer Aviva is exiting marginal markets across the world with the aim of boosting its underperforming share price"Whoa, they're concerned about profits? How provincial of them. Fraud in Indian health insurance
One of the elephants in the room as far as Indian healthcare goes is the huge amount of health insurance fraud which is corroding the Indian healthcare system on a regular basis. Because we don’t address this problem , it just gets progressively worse day by day. This is a problem which actually acts like a cancer , and wastes a lot of valuable resources . It is partly because we turn a blind eye to this that we are refusing to find effective solutions to this, by pretending that the problem of corruption within the healthcare system does not exist . Fraud within the healthcare system exist at multiple levels. It starts...

Even more Alzheimer's Aunt--or why should I do this again?
Last week I spent half a day at the gym, which I do quite frequently as I still have over 100 lbs to lose.  My phone is shut off when this happens, as phones aren't allowed there.  I was in the locker room changing and I turned the phone on to find it deluged with voice and text messages from various cousins: "Go to our mom's NOW she's not answering the phone." "She called me at work and hung up and now she's not answering." "Been trying to call her for 4 hours, please hurry over there!" "Where are you? you need to check on our mom NOW!" I was SO ANGRY.  I immediately texted everyone back saying "I was a...

Letting employees manage their own time off? Maybe it ’s a win-win. Entry 23 – 2009
At the Health as Human Capital Foundation, we often witness scenarios where employees, when given the choice and proper incentives, actually spend company time and money MORE wisely than they would under a strict set of rules or governing policies. < br / > < br / > < strong > < span style= " color: rgb(0, 51, 51); " > This is just that sort of example. < /span > < /strong > < br / > Most every company we work with has an extensive paid-time-off policy, detailing what days are allowed, for what purposes, and at what times during the year. There are extensive rules governing its use and tracking their frequency. But it ’s...
