Assessment of occupational external radiation exposure of workers in the Southwest of Libya using portable NaI detector
In this study, gamma dose rates generated from the naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM) were measured in the waste streams of a large scale and sludge onshore petroleum operations. Measurements conducted in this work involved: sludge recovery from separation tanks, sludge forming, NORM storage, scaling in oil tubulars, scaling in gas production and sedimentation in produced water evaporation ponds. Field work was carried out in many places of different terrain of an operation oil exploration and production in Murzuq basin in the Southwest of Libya. The radiation dose rates were measured using portable InSpector...

Flow cytometric detection of leukemic blasts in Libyan pediatric patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia
We present immunophenotypic data for the first time describing ALL cases in Libya. The reported results indicate that the most common subtype was pro-B ALL, and the frequency of T-ALL subtype was higher compared to previous studies. Six cases were positive for both myeloid and B lymphoid markers. Our findings may provide the basis for future studies to correlate immunophenotypic profile and genetic characteristics with treatment response among ALL patients.PMID:38394044 | DOI:10.1080/19932820.2024.2319895 (Source: Libyan Journal of Medicine)

Hepatitis B Virus Infection in Eastern Libya: Current Efforts for Overcoming Regional Barriers for Its Elimination
AbstractApproximately 2.2% of Libyans have chronic hepatitis B (CHB) and are at the highest risk of developing end-stage disease complications. Several resource-limited countries, including Libya, may be far from achieving the WHO goal of hepatitis B elimination by 2030 as a result of several testing and linkage to care (LTC) barriers. In Libya, data about the current HBV infection situation is scarce. Therefore, our study aimed to evaluate the trends of HBV in eastern Libya, Tobruk region, and try to identify the region-specific gaps and barriers that could potentially delay the WHO goal of HBV elimination. An eighteen-ye...

A survey into the utilization of probiotics and medicinal plants among individuals afflicted with gastrointestinal disorders in healthcare institutions in Sa ïda, Algeria
Conclusion: The understanding of probiotics is still in its infancy, whereas phytotherapy is more widely accepted by patients. Nonetheless, patients are open to the exploration of natural alternatives to conventional medicines.PMID:38369815 | DOI:10.1080/19932820.2024.2317492 (Source: Libyan Journal of Medicine)

Prognostic value of the fibrinogen-to-albumin ratio (FAR) in patients with chronic heart failure across the different ejection fraction spectrum
Libyan J Med. 2024 Dec 31;19(1):2309757. doi: 10.1080/19932820.2024.2309757. Epub 2024 Jan 30.ABSTRACTThe ratio of fibrinogen to albumin (FAR) is considered a new inflammatory biomarker and a predictor of cardiovascular disease risk. However, its prognostic value for patients with chronic heart failure (CHF) with different ejection fractions (EFs) remains unclear. A total of 916 hospitalized patients with CHF from January 2017 to October 2021 in the First Affiliated Hospital of Kunming Medical University were included in the study. Death occurred in 417 (45.5%) patients out of 916 patients during a median follow-up time of...

The role of human rhinovirus in COPD exacerbations in Abu Dhabi: molecular epidemiology and clinical significance
This study aimed to describe the molecular epidemiology and seasonality of human rhinovirus (HRV) in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and its association with COPD exacerbations in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Sputum specimens were collected for analysis from all COPD patients who visited a medical center from November 2021 to October 2022. The real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) test was used to detect HRV. Of the 78 COPD patients included in the study, 58 (74%) patients presented with one or more exacerbation episodes. The incidence of COPD exacerbation peaked over the winter...
