Beliefs and practices of physicians in Lebanon regarding promotional gifts and interactions with pharmaceutical companies
CONCLUSION: Although physicians in Lebanon were aware of the effect that gifts from pharmaceutical companies could have on their prescription behaviours, many of them still accepted the gifts. This study provides evidence to policymakers for decision-making regarding ethical guidance on interactions between physicians and pharmaceutical companies in Lebanon.PMID:38491897 | DOI:10.26719/emhj.24.027 (Source: Eastern Mediterranean Health Journal)

River water pollution in Lebanon: the country's most underestimated public health challenge
CONCLUSIONS: Polluted water can have a negative impact on human, wildlife and ecosystem health. Most of the assessed rivers in our study contained bacterial colonies, above the maximum recommended internationally. There is therefore an urgent need to address pollution issues in Lebanese waters to make them suitable for irrigation and other uses.PMID:38491899 | DOI:10.26719/emhj.24.029 (Source: Eastern Mediterranean Health Journal)

Optimizing the transfusion strategy in surgical patients in a Lebanese university hospital
ConclusionThis study therefore confirms that anemic patients are more likely to receive perioperative blood transfusions. Consequently, in order to reduce blood transfusion and its complications, it would be beneficial primarily to diagnose and treat anemia preoperatively. Other transfusion-saving strategies could also be useful in the setting of surgical bleeding, such as the use of tranexamic acid and different autologous transfusion methods like the cell saver. Predicting intention to vaccinate against COVID-19 in older Syrian refugees in Lebanon: Findings from a multi-wave study
CONCLUSIONS: This study developed a predictive model for vaccination intention with a moderate discriminative ability and good calibration. Prediction models in humanitarian settings can help identify refugees at higher risk of not intending to receive the COVID-19 vaccine for public health targeting.PMID:38485642 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2024.02.054 (Source: Vaccine)

Association of behaviors and asthma control in a sample of Lebanese adolescents with asthma
CONCLUSION: Our findings support the inclusion of mental health treatments for better asthma control and point to a link between behavioral issues and uncontrolled asthma. In a developing nation without a clear established strategy for asthma prevention, the findings of this study could help develop potentially beneficial public health treatments.PMID:38459891 | DOI:10.15586/aei.v52i2.1057 (Source: Allergologia et Immunopathologia)

Are the presence of asthma and the COVID-19 infection associated with behavioral changes in Lebanese adolescents?
CONCLUSION: It is confirmed that asthma and psychiatric disorders are interconnected, so it would be of great importance to include screening through a psychological intervention in treating asthmatic adolescents by means of (1) recognizing factors affecting patients' mental health, and (2) regulating uncontrolled behaviors that can exacerbate symptoms in order to avoid the future morbidity.PMID:38459893 | DOI:10.15586/aei.v52i2.1054 (Source: Allergologia et Immunopathologia)
