Noticing people, discounts and non-tobacco flavours in e-cigarette ads may increase e-cigarette product appeal among non-tobacco-using young adults
Conclusions Attention to several e-cigarette ad features (eg, people, discounts, non-tobacco flavours) was associated with increased e-cigarette product appeal, whereas attention to nicotine warnings and smoking cessation claims was associated with reduced appeal among non-tobacco-using young adults. Restricting appeal-promoting features while strengthening the effects of nicotine warnings and smoker-targeted claims in e-cigarette ads may potentially reduce e-cigarettes’ overall appeal among this priority population. Changes in patterns of youth multiple tobacco and/or e-cigarette product use in the US between 2014 and 2020: a multiple-group latent class analysis
Conclusions There was an increase in regular e-cigarette use in all three classes, but a corresponding decrease in the proportion of MTEP use. Public health interventions to discourage uptake of e-cigarettes, such as tighter restrictions on marketing to minors, are warranted and there is a need to consider disparities in the determinants of MTEP use. Terms tobacco users employ to describe e-cigarette aerosol
Conclusions The public rarely uses the term ‘aerosol’ to describe e-cigarette output, potentially complicating educational efforts that use the term. Future studies should explore public knowledge and understanding of the terms ‘aerosol’ and the more popular ‘vapor’ to better inform vaping risk communication. (Source: Tobacco Control)

Tobacco Control: a finite project with the end on the horizon
Assuming editorship of any journal carries the responsibility of continuing to advance the field in new directions, building on the foundations laid by predecessors. This is particularly so for Tobacco Control, as the leading specialist journal at a pivotal time in the history of the tobacco epidemic. It is my hope and ambition as Tobacco Control’s fourth editor-in-chief that as the journal enters its 32nd year, it has already passed the halfway mark of its life. In 2009, the first issue edited by my predecessor Professor Ruth Malone presented two opposing perspectives. One argued for phasing out of cigarette sales1;...

Tobacco companies exploitation of loopholes in the EU ban on menthol cigarettes: a case study from Denmark
Background Since May 2020, cigarettes and roll-your-own (RYO) tobacco with a characterising flavour of menthol have been banned in the European Union (EU) owing to the European Tobacco Products Directive (EU TPD). Other characterising flavours were banned in 2016. Cigars, cigarillos, pipe tobacco, heated tobacco and tobacco accessories are exempt from the ban.1 Despite the ban, a substantial proportion of adolescents and young adults in Denmark still smoke menthol cigarettes (29% pre-ban vs 20% post-ban).2 3 This may be due to tobacco industry tactics to circumvent the ban. This paper provides insights into the response of...

Cultural appropriation on Marlboro packs in Mexico: ofrenda symbolism a cruel irony
It has been previously documented that the tobacco industry exploits culturally significant symbols in its marketing practices. A 2009 Tobacco Control editorial showed how the tobacco industry, through advertising and corporate social responsibility activities, associates tobacco products with religious figures, health professionals, national landmarks and more, ‘propelling us toward a world where nothing matters more than profit for its own sake’.1 We recently found blatant examples of cultural appropriation on cigarette packs in Mexico (see figures 1 and 2). Figure 1Marlboro packs with the Mexican flag colour...

Vaping and anime: a growing area of concern
Anime, or Japanese animation which combines graphic art, characterisation and cinematography, is experiencing a global boom after having doubled its market size over the past decade.1 The industry was valued at $23.5 billion in 2020 and is continuing to grow rapidly. Anime is popular among adolescents and young adults, who are targeted with content related to romantic attraction, teen relationships, depression and despair.2 3 A 2020 survey in the USA found twice as many 18-year-olds to to 29-year-olds (27%) had a very favourable impression of anime as compared with 30-year-olds to 44-year-olds.4 Notably, smoking by anime c...

Tobacco industry advertising: efforts to shift public perception of big tobacco with paid media in the USA
In the USA, Congress banned paid television and radio advertising for cigarettes in 1970 and later extended these bans to smokeless tobacco.1 In 1998, the Master Settlement Agreement extended such prohibitions to outdoor advertisements, paid product placement and sponsorships of events.2 Even among media platforms that are still permitted to run tobacco advertising, many publishers have implemented policies prohibiting paid ads or other tobacco-sponsored content. These include social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube as well as a few traditional publishers, including The New York Times.3–6 Historicall...

Impact of menthol capsule cigarettes on menthol and non-menthol cigarette consumption in the USA, 2008-2020
In April 2021, the US Food and Drug Administration announced its intention to issue regulations banning menthol as a characterising flavour in cigarettes within a year.1 This proposal stemmed from decades of research highlighting the role of menthol cigarettes in promoting initiation, facilitating nicotine dependence and reducing cessation success, particularly in non-white people who smoke cigarettes.2 3 Prior studies have documented the growth of menthol’s market share in the context of dramatic reductions in cigarette consumption.4 5 A recent product feature in menthol cigarettes is the flavour capsule which allow...

Characterising advertising strategies and expenditures for conventional and newer smokeless tobacco products
We describe the nature, timing of and expenditures related to conventional, snus and newer ST product advertising on print, broadcast and internet media. Methods Advertising expenditures were collected using Kantar Media’s ‘Stradegy’ tool, which provides advertising data including dollars spent promoting specific products across various media channels, including print magazines and newspapers, broadcast television and radio, outdoor posters and billboards, and internet. We identified 306 smokeless products within Kantar database and collected ad expenditures retrospectively for January 2018–April 2...

Public support for policies to phase out the retail sale of cigarettes in Australia: results from a nationally representative survey

Menthol versus non-menthol flavouring and switching to e-cigarettes in black and Latinx adult menthol combustible cigarette smokers: secondary analyses from a randomised clinical trial
Conclusions Both menthol and non-menthol e-cigarettes were associated with high rates of use and acceptability among menthol smokers. Findings require confirmation in a fully powered non-inferiority or equivalence study but provide preliminary evidence to inform regulatory action on menthol e-cigarettes that could slow youth initiation without impacting black and Latinx menthol cigarette smokers interested in switching to e-cigarettes. Nicotine pouch product awareness, interest and ever use among US adults who smoke, 2021
Conclusion Levels of awareness, appeal and trial of nicotine pouches among US adults who smoke were modest, with variation by age, education, quit plans and quit attempt methods. Continued surveillance is warranted, including among naïve users and users of other tobacco and nicotine products. (Source: Tobacco Control)
