High yield clinical applications for photon counting CT in neurovascular imaging
Br J Radiol. 2024 Mar 9:tqae058. doi: 10.1093/bjr/tqae058. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPhoton-counting CT uses a novel x-ray detection mechanism that confers many advantages over that used in traditional energy integrating CT. As photon-counting CT becomes more available, it is important to thoroughly understand its benefits and highest yield areas for improvements in diagnosis of various diseases. Based on our early experience, we have identified several areas of neurovascular imaging in which photon-counting CT shows promise. Here, we describe the benefits in diagnosing arterial and venous diseases in the head, neck, a...

Development of a CT-Based radiomics-clinical model to diagnose acute pancreatitis on nonobvious findings on CT in children with pancreaticobiliary maljunction
CONCLUSIONS: Our radiomics-based nomogram is an accurate, noninvasive diagnostic technique that can identify AP in children with PBM even when CT presentation is not obvious.ADVANCES IN KNOWLEDGE: This study extracted imaging features of non-obvious pancreatitis. Then it developed and evaluated a combined model with these features.PMID:38460184 | DOI:10.1093/bjr/tqae054 (Source: The British Journal of Radiology)

Comparisons of hounsfield units and volumetric bone density in discriminating vertebral fractures on lumber CT scans
CONCLUSIONS: The QCT-measured volumetric bone mineral density is more associated with acute VFs than vHU and aHU values of the lumber spine. Although the use of vHU and aHU values for the diagnosis of osteoporosis and discriminating fracture risk is limited to scanner- and imaging protocol-specific, they have great potential for opportunistic osteoporosis screening, particularly vHU.PMID:38457607 | DOI:10.1093/bjr/tqae053 (Source: The British Journal of Radiology)

Mammographic surveillance after breast cancer
Br J Radiol. 2024 Mar 6:tqae043. doi: 10.1093/bjr/tqae043. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEarly detection of local recurrence has been shown to improve survival. What is unclear is how frequently mammography should be performed, how long surveillance should continue and how the answers to these questions vary with tumour pathology, patients age and surgery type. Many of these questions are not directly answerable from the current literature. While some of these questions will be answered by the Mammo50 study, evidence from local recurrence rates, tumour biology and the lead time of mammography can be used to guide policy. Y...

Chemoembolization as First-Line treatment for hepatocellular carcinoma invading segmental portal vein with tumor burden limited to a monosegmental level
CONCLUSIONS: Chemoembolization shows high safety and efficiency, and contributes to improved survival in patients with HCC with PVTT confined to a monosegment. Four risk factors were found to be significantly associated with improved survival rates after chemoembolization in patients with HCC with PVTT confined to a monosegment.PMID:38445658 | DOI:10.1093/bjr/tqae052 (Source: The British Journal of Radiology)

Surface guided radiotherapy practice in paediatric oncology: a survey on behalf of the SIOPE radiation oncology working group
CONCLUSION: This work provides information on the practice of SGRT in paediatrics across SIOPE-affiliated radiotherapy centres which can serve as a basis for departments when considering the purchase of SGRT systems.ADVANCES IN KNOWLEDGE: Since little information is available in the literature on the use of SGRT in paediatrics, the results of this double survey can serve as a basis for departments treating children when considering the purchase of an SGRT system.PMID:38445717 | DOI:10.1093/bjr/tqae049 (Source: The British Journal of Radiology)

Investigation of the risk factors in the development of radionecrosis in patients with brain metastases undergoing stereotactic radiotherapy
CONCLUSIONS: SRT is used effectively in BMs. The incidence of RN following SRT is undeniably frequent. It was observed that the incidence rate increased as the follow-up period increased. We showed that brain-GTV doses are not predictive of RN development, unlike other publications. In study, a high SIR score and supratentorial localization were identified as factors that increased the risk of radionecrosis.ADVANCES IN KNOWLEDGE: RN is still a common complication after SRT. Symptomatic RN is a significant cause of morbidity. The causes of RN are still not clearly identified. In many publications, brain dose and volumes hav...
