Sociability Alcohol Expectancies Shape Predictions of Drinking Behavior and Anxiety in a Novel Affective Forecasting Task
Conclusions: Clinicians could consider specifically targeting sociability expectancies for alcohol use difficulties, and future research should continue utilizing affective forecasting paradigms to test links between social anxiety, alcohol expectancies, and alcohol-use problems.PMID:38233360 | DOI:10.1080/10826084.2024.2302133 (Source: Substance Use and Misuse)

Predictors of Suicidal Ideation and Continued Substance Use Problems Among Patients Receiving Methadone Maintenance Treatment Who Have Co-Occurring Cocaine Use Disorder
CONCLUSIONS: Despite greater polysubstance use history, patients with suicide attempts did not show worse substance use outcomes than persons without suicidality. Patients with past SI fared better than those without suicidality on abstinence over 12 wk. Methadone clinics could be key points of entrance and continued services for suicide prevention.PMID:38225874 | DOI:10.1080/10826084.2024.2302131 (Source: Substance Use and Misuse)

Motivation to Quit Smoking Among Black Adults Residing in Los Angeles County Communities With Menthol Cigarette Sales Restrictions
Conclusions: Findings from this community-based sample suggest that among NHB adults who smoke menthol cigarettes, motivation to quit smoking is influenced by their perception of menthol cigarettes as harmful and awareness of local policy banning the sale of menthol cigarettes. Findings underscore the need for community-centered and culturally grounded interventions to facilitate quitting among NHB adults who smoke in order for communities covered by menthol bans to achieve health equity in reducing preventable racial inequities due to menthol cigarettes.PMID:38226661 | DOI:10.1080/10826084.2023.2294984 (Source: Substance Use and Misuse)

The Moderating Role of Stress Mindset on the Relationship between Drinking to Cope and Alcohol Consumption among Undergraduate College Student Drinkers
CONCLUSIONS: Individuals with high drinking to cope scores and who hold a debilitating stress mindset may be at a particular vulnerability for heavy alcohol consumption. The present study furthers our understanding of predictors of alcohol use in a college sample and suggests the importance of future research focused on stress mindset among college student drinkers.PMID:38204143 | DOI:10.1080/10826084.2023.2294967 (Source: Substance Use and Misuse)

Concurrent Alcohol and Opioid Intoxication in Emergency Department Patients Leads to Greater Resource Utilization
Conclusion: Our study demonstrated that mental health disorders, socioeconomic status, and increased ED utilization are associated with co-intoxication of opioids and alcohol presenting to the ED. Further research is needed to elucidate factors responsible for the increased resource use in this population.PMID:38192231 | DOI:10.1080/10826084.2023.2294963 (Source: Substance Use and Misuse)

Diphenhydramine-involved Fatal and Nonfatal Drug Overdoses in Tennessee, 2019-2022
CONCLUSION: Nonfatal overdoses remained consistent while fatal overdoses peaked in 2021 in Tennessee. Use of DPH among other illicit substances lends to evidence suggesting its use as an adulterant. Monitoring of DPH-involved fatal and nonfatal overdoses is critical to inform harm reduction initiatives.PMID:38189325 | DOI:10.1080/10826084.2023.2280542 (Source: Substance Use and Misuse)

First Used Nicotine/Cannabis Product and Associated Outcomes in Late Adolescents
CONCLUSIONS: Adolescents and young adults who use nicotine may be at increased risk for greater nicotine use and mental health consequences, but initiating NTP use simultaneously with cannabis may not increase the risk of negative outcomes above and beyond nicotine initiation. Prospective longitudinal research is needed to establish temporal associations between first-used NTP/cannabis products and relevant outcomes.PMID:38170177 | DOI:10.1080/10826084.2023.2294975 (Source: Substance Use and Misuse)

Indirect Effects of Body Mass Index and Sweet Taste Responsiveness on E-Cigarette Dependence: The Role of E-Cigarette Motives
Conclusions: The findings suggest that sweet taste responsiveness, opposed to BMI, is associated with a wider range of e-cigarette use motives and indirectly relates to e-cigarette dependence via several e-cigarette use motives.PMID:38149796 | DOI:10.1080/10826084.2023.2294962 (Source: Substance Use and Misuse)
