Understanding Regional Patterns of Overdose Deaths Related to Opioids and Psychostimulants
CONCLUSION: Our results illustrated the heterogenous geographic distribution of the growing concurrent opioid and psychostimulant overdose crisis. The substantial regional variation we identified highlights the need for local data to guide policymaking and treatment planning. The association of opioid-psychostimulant overdose mortality with social vulnerability demonstrates the critical need in impacted counties for tailored treatment that addresses the complex medical and social needs of people who use both opioids and psychostimulants.PMID:38037904 | DOI:10.1080/10826084.2023.2287220 (Source: Substance Use and Misuse)

Associations between Health-Related Use of Social Media and Positive Lifestyle Behaviors: Findings from a Representative Sample of US Adult Smokers
Conclusion: Smokers use social media for health-related purposes at comparable rates to nonsmokers. While our findings indicate that these platforms present a novel opportunity for health promotion among smokers, future research exploring the utility of social media in smoking cessation is crucial.PMID:38037958 | DOI:10.1080/10826084.2023.2287199 (Source: Substance Use and Misuse)

Chronic Pain and Cannabis Use Frequency, Intensity, and Severity in Young Adults
DISCUSSION: In this sample of young adults who use cannabis, chronic pain was significantly associated with frequent, intense cannabis use, as well as more cannabis-related negative consequences. These findings suggest that chronic pain may be a marker for a particularly high-risk pattern of cannabis use in this age group, thus identifying an especially vulnerable subset of young adults who may require heightened research and clinical attention.PMID:38017655 | DOI:10.1080/10826084.2023.2287240 (Source: Substance Use and Misuse)

A Seeking Safety Mobile App for Recovery from PTSD and Substance Use Disorder: Results of a Randomized Controlled Trial
CONCLUSION: This first RCT on a SS mobile app had positive results for reduction in substance use and trauma symptoms compared to a control app. This is noteworthy as mental health mobile apps, in general, evidence few positive outcomes. Our substance use finding is also notable as psychosocial interventions in PTSD/SUD populations find it harder to achieve reduction in SUD than trauma symptoms. Our control app may have represented too strong a comparison and weakened our ability to find results on secondary outcomes by condition.PMID:38012830 | DOI:10.1080/10826084.2023.2280540 (Source: Substance Use and Misuse)

The Marketing and Perceptions of Non-Tobacco Blunt Wraps on Twitter
CONCLUSIONS: The large proportion of organic tweets is indicative of the nascency of N-TBWs, which will need to be marketed more extensively if they are to replace cigar products used by blunt smokers.PMID:37982451 | DOI:10.1080/10826084.2023.2280572 (Source: Substance Use and Misuse)
