'Spice' Use Motivations, Experiences, and Repercussions among Veterans of the United States Armed Forces
CONCLUSIONS: SCs were explicitly disliked both independently and relative to marijuana. Nine discussed avoiding positive military drug screens as a consideration, but negative initial experiences generally prevented progression to habitual use. Veterans did not view SCs as a suitable marijuana replacement. Fears that SCs are being used as a marijuana alternative among veterans subject to frequent drug testing appear unfounded. These interviews suggest that routine military drug testing did not motivate individuals to use SCs habitually as a marijuana replacement; however, veterans' negative interpretation of SC effects con...

Individual Differences in Substance Use Motives, Trauma, and Stress Among College-Based Polysubstance Users
Conclusions: Individual differences in motivations for use were partly explained by frequency of alcohol use and alcohol problem severity, but not by history of trauma or stress. Finally, while patterns of correlations among motivations for use across substances suggested a general tendency to be motivated to use substances for similar reasons, this was not supported by confirmatory factor models. Overall, shared motives may inform potential behavioral patterns for co-use of substances during college and might advise future treatment efforts.PMID:38544304 | DOI:10.1080/10826084.2024.2330911 (Source: Substance Use and Misuse)

Sex and Racial/Ethnic Patterns of Tobacco Product Use Among Students at a U.S. University in 2021-2023
Conclusions: Considering higher health risk of con-current use of multiple tobacco products, dual/poly tobacco use prevention strategies targeting male and non-Hispanic White students may be considered.PMID:38532555 | DOI:10.1080/10826084.2024.2330919 (Source: Substance Use and Misuse)

Eating Disorder Symptomatology Among Young Adult Cigarette and E-Cigarette Users
Discussion: Our findings suggest young adults with ED symptomatology were more likely to be users of e-cigarettes exclusively or dual users. It will be necessary to examine how these associations manifest using longitudinal and clinical populations in future research.PMID:38533542 | DOI:10.1080/10826084.2024.2330910 (Source: Substance Use and Misuse)

Drug Use-Related Discrimination in Healthcare Settings and Subsequent Emergency Department Utilization in a Prospective Cohort Study of People With a History of Injection Drug Use
CONCLUSIONS: Drug use-related discrimination in healthcare settings was associated with greater subsequent ED utilization in this sample. Further exploration of mechanisms driving this relationship may help improve care and optimize healthcare engagement for people with a history of injection drug use.PMID:38519443 | DOI:10.1080/10826084.2024.2330906 (Source: Substance Use and Misuse)

Were Needles Everywhere?: Differing Views on Syringe Waste and Disposal Associated With Needs-Based Syringe Services Programs Among Community Partners and Persons Who Inject Drugs
CONCLUSIONS: Participants' views on whether syringe waste was associated with needs-based SSPs often aligned with their support or opposition for needs-based SSPs. These differing views resulted in challenges finding common ground to discuss SSP operations amid an HIV outbreak among PWID. SSPs might consider addressing syringe waste concerns by expanding syringe disposal efforts and implementing community engagement and stigma reduction activities.PMID:38509704 | DOI:10.1080/10826084.2024.2330895 (Source: Substance Use and Misuse)

Patterns in Tobacco, E-Cigarette, and Cannabis Advertising Exposure Among California Adolescents and Associations With Future Use Expectations
CONCLUSION: California adolescents' exposure to tobacco, e-cigarette, and cannabis marketing is common, follows similar patterns, and is associated with use susceptibility. Comprehensive restrictions on marketing accessible to adolescents could help prevent youth use.PMID:38509707 | DOI:10.1080/10826084.2024.2330912 (Source: Substance Use and Misuse)

The Association of Frequency of Worry About Financial Debt With Substance Use Among Adults in Ontario, Canada
CONCLUSIONS: The frequency of worry about debt might have an important role in substance use, which suggests that financial well-being is vital in substance use prevention and harm reduction.PMID:38514251 | DOI:10.1080/10826084.2024.2330902 (Source: Substance Use and Misuse)
