Blowing in the wind
A perennial question in biological science is how much the average responses to investigated treatment modalities apply in the individual patient, considering the existence of outliers to the central tendency. The answer remains under consideration ( “blowin’ in the wind”, to borrow from the composer singer Bob Dylan). In this special issue of Seminars in Orthodontics the authors explore the theme of recognizing and narrowing the gap between scientific evidence and clinical practice. How far or how close are we tying evidence with practice ? (Source: Seminars in Orthodontics)

Social media use among orthodontic professionals: Present and future
The evolution of digital technology has impacted how we share and access relevant information, and revolutionized how we promote practice. The utilization of social media in the field of orthodontics is a double-edged sword, involving potential and pitfalls for clinicians, patients, and the profession as a whole. It is crucial to provide balanced and evidence-based information through these platforms to ensure patient safety. Additionally, adherence to guidelines set by regulatory bodies is important to maintain ethical practices. (Source: Seminars in Orthodontics)

Orthodontic patient experiences shared on social media: a scoping review
The use of social media has increased significantly, which enables the sharing of patient experiences of healthcare interventions. Evaluation of the available data regarding patient experiences of their own orthodontic treatment is lacking. The present registered scoping review aimed to collate and evaluate the current evidence to enable a greater understanding of the experiences of patients, undergoing orthodontic treatment, conveyed via social media platforms regarding their treatment. Studies with patients reporting their orthodontic experiences through social media platforms regarding orthodontic treatment were conside...

Sharing and assessing the impact of orthodontic research on social media: The case of altmetrics
In the age of web 2.0 technologies, social media platforms facilitate rapid communication, direct spread to large numbers of users, within and beyond scholarly communities, as well as discussion of the shared information between posters and followers. Scholars participate in scientific conversations using mainly blogs, social and professional networking sites, video sharing platforms, forums, and content aggregators or reference management software. Current evidence suggests a likely increase of citation counts of research work following dissemination through specialized social media applications for academics. (Source: Se...

Gingival health changes around temporary anchorage devices during COVID-19 quarantine – A longitudinal controlled report
The recent emergence and widespread infectious propensities of COVID-19 are regarded as global concerns by governments and public health organizations1. On February 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared COVID-19 a global pandemic following a thorough assessment of its risk to public health after a sharp spike in acute infections 2. As a consequence, many countries initiated quarantine procedures whereby four billion people are estimated to have undergone quarantine or experienced lockdown restrictions around the world 3. Editorial: Early Treatment: Where Are We today?
Early orthodontic treatment remains a controversial topic in orthodontics around the world, mainly due to the uncertainty of its benefits and long-term stability. Nevertheless, the chance to correct, or at least improve, malocclusions at an early stage, although challenging, is still very attractive. Many malocclusions can potentially benefit from simple and efficient interceptive treatment; the most often cited are posterior crossbite with midline deviation1, dento-skeletal class III malocclusion2,3,4, impacted teeth5, increased overjet with higher risk of upper incisor trauma6. “Airway Friendly” Orthodontics! Are You Serious?
It seems that controversies have been and still are an intrinsic part of orthodontics even proceeding Edward Angle. And like the extraction/expansion debate it seems to be never ending. A few decades ago, the controversies seemed less egregious like claims for more superior results using passive-self-ligating brackets. Now we have some newer challenges with potentially more harm like some pretentious claims about expansion, extractions and early treatment effects on “airway.” Some questions this paper addresses are: Are the TMD apostates now the airway friendly orthodontists? How can ostensibly meaningful, passionate, ...

Insights in orthodontic genetic and epigenetic knowledge and its translation in clinical practice
Applying genetic practice to current medicine has become more common and necessary in the prognosis, diagnosis and outcome of a myriad of diseases and disorders. Despite the general awareness of its importance, genetic knowledge still lacks direct application in daily orthodontic practice. The aim was to identify multiple genetic associations with orofacial phenotypes, highlight the importance of genetic influence in orthodontics, and describe challenges and gaps in integrating genetic knowledge in clinical practice. Early treatment for anterior open bite: Choosing adequate treatment approaches
Anterior open bite is considered one of the most challenging malocclusions to correct, especially regarding stability. There are numerous publications on the subject but with controversial information. Disagreements occur in most aspects of this malocclusion, such as the definition of an open bite, its etiological factors, treatment timing, and ideal treatment alternatives. The lack of consensus on the etiology of anterior open bite has led to different treatment approaches, which may explain the high rate of post-treatment instability.
