Applications of cognitive behavioral therapy in cancer survivorship.
This article presents an overview of the diversity of concerns facing those in cancer survivorship, provides a framework for conceptualizing the presenting concerns in patients with a history of cancer utilizing the biopsychosocial model, and highlights the use of CBT as an intervention to address these concerns via case studies. Risk management in dialectical behavior therapy: Treating life-threatening behaviors as problems to be solved.
Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is an empirically supported behavioral treatment for individuals with borderline personality disorder who frequently exhibit life-threatening behavior, such as suicide attempts, nonsuicidal self-injury urges and actions, and suicidal ideation. We provide an overview of the theoretical framework by which DBT conceptualizes these life-threatening behaviors and the principles by which safety planning measures are implemented and maintained throughout treatment. The importance of orienting clients to treatment and obtaining their commitment to decrease life-threatening behavior is reviewed. R...

Therapist challenges and client responses in psychodynamic psychotherapy: An empirically supported case study.
In this case study of an adult female client working with a doctoral student female therapist in 85 sessions of individual psychodynamic psychotherapy, we analyzed the antecedents, challenges, and consequences for 53 challenges in the intake and first five sessions, the middle three sessions, and the final three sessions. Within the context of a strong therapeutic relationship and when the client was balanced in being defended as well as open/reflective, the therapist’s challenges that were of high quality (deep, clear, empathic, and moderately forceful) were associated with the client becoming more open/reflective. In c...

A group’s level of defensive functioning affects individual outcomes in group psychodynamic-interpersonal psychotherapy.
We used an actor–partner interdependence model (APIM) to study the association between the individual group member and other group therapy members’ defensive functioning on an individual group member’s treatment outcome. We hypothesized that (a) more adaptive individual defensive functioning at pretreatment will be significantly related to better treatment outcomes (i.e., lower binge-eating and interpersonal distress) at 6 months post-treatment; and (b) more adaptive other group members’ defensive functioning at pretreatment will be significantly related to better treatment outcomes at 6 months post-treatment. Part...

Comorbid major depressive disorder in cognitive-behavior group treatment for social anxiety disorder: An examination of processes of symptom change.
Individuals with social anxiety disorder (SAD) typically have elevated depressive symptoms and approximately 50% also meet criteria for major depressive disorder (MDD; Beesdo et al., 2007). In the present study, we examined the relationship between social anxiety and depressive symptoms during cognitive-behavior group treatment (CBGT) for SAD. Specifically, we compared individuals with SAD and comorbid MDD and individuals with SAD without MDD to examine the role of MDD as a moderator of social anxiety–depression relationship. Participants were 90 individuals seeking treatment for SAD (36% were diagnosed with MDD), who co...

Decentering the use of police: An abolitionist approach to safety planning in psychotherapy.
Psychotherapy, Vol 60(1), Mar 2023, 51-62; doi:10.1037/pst0000422The dominant narrative in much of the world, but especially the West, is that public safety and security are provided by policing. Psychotherapy invests in this dominant narrative via its reliance on emergency services provided by the state, such as 911 and police, to pursue the safety of clients and the larger society. However, the long-documented history of oppressive systems of policing suggest that these dominant narratives operate to protect powerful groups while surveilling and policing marginalized people, but particularly Black and Brown communities. ...

Psychotherapies for clients with physical health conditions: A scoping review of demographic reporting.
Recent research has highlighted the importance of investigating the efficacy of psychotherapeutic interventions for individuals with physical health conditions. To date, there is evidence that psychotherapeutic interventions are efficacious for a range of physical health conditions (e.g., cancer, obesity, and diabetes). However, less is known about for whom psychotherapeutic interventions for physical health conditions are effective. One reason for this might be pervasive underreporting of demographic data in research, despite the National Institute of Health’s 2016 call to action to include such information. Specificall...

Emotion-focused therapy for fear of cancer recurrence: A hospital-based exploratory outcome study.
Fear of cancer recurrence (FCR) is a main concern for most cancer survivors and can bring significant distress impacting well-being and quality of life. Although other psychological approaches have been developed for dysfunctional FCR, based on previous research, emotion-focused therapy (EFT) might also be a relevant intervention for treating this concern. A total of 17 adults with a cancer diagnosis and presenting FCR among other cancer-related concerns were offered EFT, delivered in a regular practice in a cancer hospital (mean number of sessions = 13, range: 4–25). Outcome and process instruments were used to assess g...

Life review therapy for holocaust survivors: Two systematic case studies.
Psychotherapy, Vol 59(4), Dec 2022, 521-532; doi:10.1037/pst0000419Having reached the last phase of their lives, many Holocaust survivors (HS) experience an increase in vulnerability. Despite their remarkable ability to adapt, the process of aging presents them with new challenges, often leading to an increased need for therapy. This is made all the more difficult by the fact that there is little research on trauma therapy in old age. To date, no randomized controlled study has been carried out to examine the effectiveness of psychotherapy in HS. The present case studies report the implementation of life review therapy (LR...

Personality trait domains predict psychiatric symptom and functional outcomes.
This study examined the impact of pathological personality traits has on baseline symptoms and functioning, as well as their impact on the longitudinal course in a large cohort of adult inpatient psychiatric sample (N = 804). The Personality Inventory for DSM-5 (PID-5; Krueger et al., 2012) was used to assess trait domains impact on longitudinal outcomes (anxiety, depression, somatic symptoms, and functional impairment) using hierarchical repeated measures modeling. Results indicate Negative Affectivity and Detachment were related to higher admission severity in all four outcome domains. Psychoticism was related to somatic...
