Psychotherapy, Vol 59(4), Dec 2022, 629-640; doi:10.1037/pst0000430High-frequency monitoring of psychological variables has been recommended to monitor and manage psychotherapeutic processes. However, high-frequency monitoring might be regarded as burdensome for participating patients. This feasibility study applied the concept of high-frequency treatment monitoring in patients with seizures and psychiatric comorbidities in an outpatient neurology service. The treatment monitoring entailed the development of a personalized process questionnaire, daily online monitoring, and regular reflection of the current time series gra...

First do no harm: Principles of care for clients with sexual identity confusion and/or conflict.
Psychotherapy, Vol 59(4), Dec 2022, 487-497; doi:10.1037/pst0000426Individuals who experience sexual identity confusion and/or conflict face unique stressors and life circumstances for which they may seek psychotherapy; however, little specific guidance exists for therapists working with clients who experience sexual identity confusion and/or conflict. To meet this need, we present a framework for therapists whose clients experience distress related to sexual identity confusion and/or conflict. We first define and describe sexual identity confusion and conflict, situating both in developmental theories of sexual identity. ...

Bridging religion and spirituality with gestalt psychotherapy to improve clinical symptoms: Preliminary findings using gestalt pastoral care.
Psychotherapy, Vol 59(3), Sep 2022, 400-404; doi:10.1037/pst0000425An inherent tension between religion and psychotherapy has inhibited the conversation between the two paradigms in determining the most effective approaches to improving mental health outcomes for people of faith. Preliminary research has suggested that the intersection between the two may prove fruitful in providing mental health interventions. As a part of a broader big-data study sponsored by the Bridges Consortium of Brigham Young University and underwritten by the John Templeton Foundation, the present study evaluated the effectiveness of the spiritual...

A comparison of emotion-focused therapy and cognitive-behavioral therapy in the treatment of generalized anxiety disorder: Results of a feasibility randomized controlled trial.
Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is a chronic mental health difficulty typically present in primary care settings. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is the psychological intervention with the best evidence for its efficacy for GAD. The development of other psychological interventions can increase client choice. This feasibility trial examined an initial assessment of the efficacy of EFT in comparison to CBT in the treatment of GAD in the context of an Irish public health service. The trial provided information on recruitment, therapist training/adherence, and client retention relevant for a potential noninferiority tria...

Clients’ experience of LGBQ affirmative and nonaffirmative practice in China: An interpretative phenomenological analysis.
Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and questioning (LGBQ) affirmative therapy originated from an individualistic culture that emphasizes autonomy and personal independence, but it has become more commonly practiced in Mainland China. Given the influence of collectivistic culture, where Chinese people value interpersonal relationship and harmony more than personal interest, it is unclear whether Chinese sexual minority clients have different expectations and experiences of LGBQ affirmative practice. The purpose of this study is to explore Chinese LGBQ clients’ perceived characteristics and impacts of LGBQ affirmative and nonaffirmat...

A latent trajectory analysis of inpatient depression treatment.
Patients seeking psychotherapy may progress through treatment in varying ways. Modeling multiple treatment trajectories through growth mixture modeling provides a comprehensive way of understanding a patient population. Multiple trajectories may additionally help researchers describe complexities within a patient population, such as those with severe and persistent disorders and comorbid symptoms, to understand characteristics of patients that may be struggling during treatment. We analyzed the depression symptom outcome measures (PHQ-9) for 246 patients receiving inpatient depression treatment. We constructed a growth mix...

One more wall to cross: The role of psychologists in addressing integrated health among undocumented Latinx immigrants in inpatient medical settings.
Over the past decade, there has been increased attention to the benefits of an integrated health-care care model in which psychologists play a vital role collaborating with other health providers to deliver services in inpatient medical settings, such as emergency departments and acute care medical units. Psychologists working in inpatient medical settings can facilitate access to mental health services and referrals, reduce mental health stigma, improve health outcomes associated with insight into psychosocial factors that affect health and illness, improve communication between patients and providers, and increase sensit...
