Evolution in Parental Leave Policies: Plastic Surgery and Obstetrics/Gynecology Lead the Way
Conclusions: There has been little improvement in parental leave allowances since 2006, and the current median, 5 weeks, falls short of guidelines recommending 6 to 12 weeks following the birth of a child. Starting in July of 2021, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education will require medical boards to provide a minimum of 6 weeks of leave. Ongoing improvement in culture and policy are needed to support residents and their families. (Source: Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery)

Surgeon Gender-Related Differences in Operative Coding in Plastic Surgery
Conclusions: The authors’ findings support the hypothesis that billing and coding practices can, in part, account for income differences between male and female plastic surgeons. Potential explanations include practices focusing on larger and more complex operative cases and differences in coding practices. (Source: Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery)

Application of the E-Value to Assess Bias in Observational Research in Plastic Surgery
Conclusions: The authors determined that E-values vary substantially across the literature and that unmeasured confounding may be present in a high number of observational studies. Although extant statistical techniques will continue to be necessary to control for measured confounding, the E-value is a novel concept that can facilitate more robust sensitivity analyses in plastic surgery research. Practical Strategies in Reconstruction of Soft-Tissue Sarcoma
Learning Objectives: After studying this article, the participant should be able to: 1. Discuss the natural history and pathophysiology of sarcoma. 2. Summarize the most up-to-date multidisciplinary management of soft-tissue sarcoma. 3. Provide a synopsis of reconstructive modalities based on anatomical location. 4. Highlight some novel strategies for treatment of lymphedema and phantom limb pain that are common sequelae following treatment and resection of soft-tissue sarcomas. Summary: The management of soft-tissue sarcoma presents unique challenges to the reconstructive surgeon. The optimal management mandate...

Comparative Analysis between Side-to-End and End-to-End Lymphaticovenous Anastomosis for Secondary Lower Limb Lymphedema
Background: The purpose of this retrospective study was to describe, evaluate, and compare the outcome between end-to-end and side-to-end lymphaticovenous anastomoses for all stages of lymphedema. Methods: A total of 123 patients were divided into the end-to-end (n = 63) or the side-to-end (n = 60) group. The demographics and intraoperative and postoperative findings were evaluated. In addition, subcategory evaluation was performed for early- and advanced-phase lymphedema. Results: The demographic findings were insignificant. The intraoperative findings showed a significantly higher number of lymphaticove...

Risk Factors for Partial Flap Loss in a Free Flap: A 12-Year Retrospective Study of Anterolateral Thigh Free Flaps in 303 Lower Extremity Cases
Conclusions: The distance from the perforator to the flap margin, the flap elevation layer, and the flap size affected the occurrence of partial necrosis. Taking these into consideration, anterolateral thigh free flaps of appropriate size and thickness should be harvested. CLINICAL QUESTION/LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Risk, III. A Multicenter, Randomized, Controlled, Clinical Trial Evaluating Dehydrated Human Amniotic Membrane in the Treatment of Venous Leg Ulcers
Conclusions: dHACA and standard of care, either applied weekly or biweekly, significantly healed more venous leg ulcers than standard of care alone, suggesting that the use of aseptically processed dHACA is advantageous and a safe and effective treatment option in the healing of chronic venous leg ulcers. CLINICAL QUESTION/LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Therapeutic, I. (Source: Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery)
