Innovation in Delivering a Live, Virtual Cadaver Dissection Course
Summary: The availability of advanced telecommunication technology and the social restrictions introduced by a global pandemic have compelled the medical community to explore new avenues of surgical education. Although cadaver courses have long been a fundamental method for learning surgical anatomy and improving operative preparedness, the COVID-19 pandemic has made traditional dissections less practical. The need for quality virtual learning experiences motivated the authors to design and assess the feasibility of organizing a live, virtual upper extremity peripheral nerve cadaver dissection course. Three phases were...

Plastic Surgery Residency Applicants’ Perceptions of a Virtual Interview Cycle
Conclusions: The inaugural virtual interview cycle had several advantages and disadvantages. Lessons learned from this year could be utilized toward building a more equitable, fair, and effective potential virtual cycle in years to come. (Source: Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery)

Unlocking Performance Excellence: Review of Evidence-Based Mindful Meditation
Summary: Mindfulness has recently been implemented by advanced military combatants, firefighters, and those in other very intellectually demanding and fast-paced professions. A surgeon, similarly, is faced with many difficult challenges, whether it be a complex and meticulous surgery, extensive clinical responsibilities, or simply the challenges faced in residency. In current curricula, there is no training to introspectively deal with these stressors. Regardless of what we face in our personal lives, the lives of patients are literately in our hands. Would it not be prudent and wise to train our brain to not only deli...

Informed Consent Practices in Global Surgery among Plastic Surgery Organizations
Conclusions: Practices related to obtaining informed consent vary widely among global surgery organizations. The development of standardized protocols and guidelines will ensure that global health organizations, in collaboration with their local partners, properly obtain informed consent for procedures and sharing publicly viewable content. Current Management of Late Posttraumatic Enophthalmos
This article addresses the current management of late posttraumatic enophthalmos. In this article, the authors describe surgically relevant orbital anatomy and oculo-orbital relations, the pathophysiology of enophthalmos, clinical and radiologic findings, decision-making in management, and surgical treatment. The authors attempt to cover some of the main challenges and recent advances in the management of late posttraumatic enophthalmos, including intraoperative navigation and patient-specific implants. The Superthin Profunda Artery Perforator Flap for Extremity Reconstruction: Clinical Implications
Summary: The profunda artery perforator flap has numerous advantages. For coverage of extremity wounds, however, traditional subfascial harvest results in a thick flap, which routinely requires secondary thinning. The author describes his approach and experience with thin and superthin profunda artery perforator flaps for extremity reconstruction. With preoperative perforator localization via computed tomography angiogram, color Doppler, and handheld Doppler, the author used a single dominant perforator for extremity reconstruction in 10 consecutive patients. The mean age of patients who had a thin or superthin profund...

Impact of Technology on Conjoined Twin Separation: Are We Further Ahead?
Summary: The success of conjoined twin separation has increased since the 1950s, notwithstanding the numerous technical and physiologic challenges encountered in such procedures. Together with improvements in our understanding of conjoined twin physiology and the accumulation of surgical expertise, technological advances have largely paralleled the improvement in outcomes. In particular, advances in imaging modalities, adjuncts to abdominal wall closure such as mesh and tissue expansion, and three-dimensional modeling have been instrumental in advancing care for these patients. Considered together, these domains have a...

A Rectoprostatic Fascia Reinforcement Flap for Rectal Injury and Rectoneovaginal Fistula in Gender-Affirmation Surgery
Conclusion: A rectoprostatic fascia reinforcement flap is an alternative technique to repair intraoperative rectal injury and rectoneovaginal fistulas incorporating the neovaginal lining with a skin graft or sigmoid colon in gender-affirmation surgery for trans women. Single-Photon Emission Computed Tomographic Reverse Lymphatic Mapping for Groin Vascularized Lymph Node Transplant Planning
Conclusions: The authors’ use of presurgical SPECT/CT reverse lymphatic mapping together with limited flap dissection and intraoperative gamma probe guidance resulted in no clinical cases of iatrogenic donor lower extremity lymphedema. The high incidence of drainage from the lower extremity to the superficial inguinal region mandates the use of reverse lymphatic mapping when performing groin vascularized lymph node transplantation. Superficial and Functional Lymphatic Anatomy of the Upper Extremity
Conclusions: This study details the anatomy of three forearm lymphatic channels and their connections to the upper arm in living adults without lymphatic disease. Knowledge of these pathways and variations is relevant to any individual performing procedures on the upper extremities, as injury to the superficial lymphatic system can predispose patients to the development of lymphedema. Dental Implant Outcomes in Fibula Mandible Reconstruction with or without Vertical Distraction for Symphysis Cross-Arch Segmental Defects
Summary: Dental implant complications in patients with a symphysis cross-arch defect occur following fibula mandible reconstruction due to mechanical stress. The authors compared implant outcomes after single-barrel fibula mandible reconstruction with immediate implant placement or after completion of vertical distraction osteogenesis. Three-Dimensional Rapid Printing–Assisted Individualized Total Nasal Reconstruction Based on a Database of Normal External Noses
In this study, three-dimensional laser scanning was used to create a database of normal external noses of Han Chinese individuals in East China to assist in total nose reconstruction. Methods: Three-dimensional laser scanning was used to create a database of normal external noses. Patients scheduled for nasal reconstruction had their measurements scaled according to head circumference and facial proportions to simulate a new reconstructed shape for the residual nose using this database. The personalized new shape was produced using rapid three-dimensional printing for preoperative evaluation and surgical design. ...
