The suppressor of cytokine signaling-1 ( < em > SOCS1 < /em > ) gene polymorphism and promoter methylation correlate with the course of COVID-19
Pathog Glob Health. 2022 Nov 29:1-9. doi: 10.1080/20477724.2022.2151861. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe suppressor of the cytokine signaling-1 (SOCS1) gene is a short sequence located on chromosome 16 that functions to induce an appropriate immune response and is an essential physiological regulator of interferon (IFN) signaling. In addition to comparing the global DNA and SOCS1 gene promoter methylation status between our patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and healthy controls, this study demonstrates the effect of the SOCS1 rs33989964 polymorphism on patients with COVID-19. The study group included 139 ...

Do antidiabetic drugs prevent the transformation of < em > Acanthamoeba < /em > trophozoite into cyst form?
This study examines the effects of three different drugs with metformin, acarbose and pioglitazone active ingredients used for antidiabetic purposes on Acanthamoeba cysts and trophozoites. Cultures of A. castellanii trophozoites and cysts were prepared to test the anti-amoebic activity of metformin, acarbose and pioglitazone. Cultures were then prepared for A. castellanii cyst and trophozoite forms and parasites were exposed to different concentrations (0.750 mg/mL, 0.375 mg/mL, 0.186 mg/mL and 0.093 mg/mL) of metformin, acarbose and pioglitazone. As a result of the study, the reproductive potential suppressive effects and...

Applicability of the Mexican ovitrap system for Aedes vector surveillance in Colombia
This study aimed to summarize the available literature about the ovitrap system and to determine its feasibility, required resources and costs when installing and maintaining this vector surveillance system in the municipality of Los Patios, Colombia. A scoping review to assess the role of ovitraps as a tool for Aedes vector surveillance was conducted. The subsequent fieldwork consisted of mapping the municipality, manufacturing, and installing 40 ovitraps in 10 blocks, revising them weekly for 4 weeks by two half-time employed vector control technicians, and carrying out a cost analysis. A total of 38 studies were include...
