Prevalence of antibiotics prescription amongst patients with and without COVID-19 in low- and middle-income countries: a systematic review and meta-analysis
In conclusion, antibiotics are highly prescribed across LMICs, and their use is increased in patients with COVID-19. Amongst those prescriptions, inappropriate and multiple use was not uncommon. This study has several limitations, as it included two studies in an ambulatory setting, and some of the studies included in the analysis were conducted on a small scale. Nevertheless, our findings suggest that urgent action to improve prescribing practices is essential.PMID:36562085 | DOI:10.1080/20477724.2022.2160892 (Source: Pathogens and Global Health)

Genes drive organisms and slippery slopes
Pathog Glob Health. 2022 Dec 22:1-10. doi: 10.1080/20477724.2022.2160895. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe bioethical debate about using gene drives to alter or eradicate wild populations has focused mostly on issues concerning short-term risk assessment and management, governance and oversight, and public and community engagement, but has not examined big-picture- 'where is this going?'-questions in great depth. In other areas of bioethical controversy, big-picture questions often enter the public forum via slippery slope arguments. Given the incredible potential of gene drive organisms to alter the Earth's biota, it is ...

Circulating markers of neutrophil activation and lung injury in pediatric pneumonia in low-resource settings
Pathog Glob Health. 2022 Dec 22:1-9. doi: 10.1080/20477724.2022.2160885. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDiagnostic biomarkers for childhood pneumonia could guide management and improve antibiotic stewardship in low-resource settings where chest x-ray (CXR) is not always available. In this cross-sectional study, we measured chitinase 3-like protein 1 (CHI3L1), surfactant protein D (SP-D), lipocalin-2 (LCN2), and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases-1 (TIMP-1) in Ugandan children under the age of five hospitalized with acute lower respiratory tract infection. We determined the association between biomarker levels and primar...

Epidemiology of free-living amoebae infections in Africa: a review
Pathog Glob Health. 2022 Dec 22:1-8. doi: 10.1080/20477724.2022.2160890. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFLA-related conditions are a rare medical occurrence. Despite their rarity, they are considered a public health concern for two reasons: the absence of a regular treatment regimen in the case of central nervous system infections and the fast progression of the symptoms leading to fatal outcomes. A total of 358 articles were retrieved from different databases (91 from PubMed, 26 from NCBI, 138 from Academia, 102 from Science Direct, and one from IJMED). 7 (46.6%) clinical cases came from Egypt, 2 (13.3%) cases of FLA infec...
