Impact of Geriatric Assessment on the Tolerability of Combination Chemotherapy in Older Patients with Advanced Cancer: A Matched-Pair Analysis
Because of their individual vulnerabilities, treatment decisions for older patients can be difficult. Geriatric assessment (GA) may help to select patients for systemic treatment, but its value is still unproven. Older cancer patients ( ≥65 years of age) with and without complex GA followed by discussion in the geriatric-oncologic conference, who had been treated in palliative intention with standard combination chemotherapy at the Evang. Kliniken Essen-Mitte, were retrospectively evaluated. All patients had been orally informed about the treatment options and had chosen chemotherapy beside supportive care. To reduce sel...

Clinical outcome and treatment sequences of patients with advanced pancreatic cancer treated with contemporary chemotherapy protocols
Introduction Systemic therapy is firmly established in patients with advanced or metastatic pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Clinical efficacy is still modest and options are limited. Combination therapy protocols such as FOLFIRINOX and gemcitabine/nab-paclitaxel (Gem/NP) define standard-of-care. Patients may receive a sequence of both regimens as first- and second-line palliative treatment. However, there is no guidance regarding a preferred order. Methods Retrospective analysis of clinical characteristics, treatment trajectories and outcomes of patients with advanced PDAC treated at the West German Cancer Cent...

Effects of a Sound Intervention on Physical and Emotional Well-Being in Patients with Cancer: A Prospective Randomized Trial
Conclusion: A 4-week self-administered sound intervention was feasible in outpatients suffering from cancer. Using a panel of 5 questionnaires, passive sound interventions appeared to be more likely to positively influence patient-reported outcomes. In particular, a positive impact was documented in social functioning and fatigue.Oncol Res Treat 2023;46:1 –10 (Source: Oncology Research and Treatment)

Exercise as medicine could be a chance for early detection and prevention of Cardiotoxicity in cancer treatments – a narrative review
Background: For cancer patients, cardiovascular complications as a consequence of certain oncological therapies are the leading cause of death, apart from the cancer itself. Currently, there are no uniform guidelines for detecting subclinical cardiotoxicity. Hence, the identification of cardiotoxicity arises late in the course of myocardial dysfunction after cardiac damage has occurred already. Early detection, prevention and treatment of these cardiotoxic effects remains a challenge, therefore supportive strategies such as physical activity gain in importance. Summary: Exercise therapy, during and after cancer therapy, i...

Medical oncology education in Europe: equipping medical oncologists to provide the best care for patients with cancer
Abstract High quality, evidence-based and practice relevant education is essential to equip medical oncologists to provide high-quality care for patients with cancer. The need for medical oncology education is growing due to a rapid development of new therapies with novel mechanisms of action. Moreover, the number of patients with cancer is increasing with the rising in incidence and improved survival for some cancers. Access to medical oncology education and training opportunities, particularly in research, varies considerably in different countries and regions. The European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO), the Euro...

A Phase II Study of Nab-Paclitaxel and Gemcitabine as First-Line Therapy in Patients with Cholangiocarcinoma Ineligible for Cisplatin-Based Chemotherapy (NACHO)
Conclusions: The NACHO trial supports safety and efficacy of nab-paclitaxel and gemcitabine in patients with advanced CCA ineligible for cisplatin-based therapy and should be further evaluated in a larger prospective trial. (Source: Oncology Research and Treatment)
