Occupational risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection and reinfection during the second pandemic surge: a cohort study
Conclusions A 10-fold reduction in the hazard of being virologically tested positive was observed among anti-SARS-CoV-2 seropositive essential workers regardless of their sector of occupation, confirming the seroprotective effect of a previous SARS-CoV2 exposure at least 6 months after infection. Sleep duration and sleep efficiency in UK long-distance heavy goods vehicle drivers
Conclusions The high prevalence of short sleep duration and insufficient sleep quality (efficiency) rate suggest that many HGV drivers have increased risk of excessive daytime sleepiness, road traffic accidents and chronic disease. Future sleep research in UK HGV cohorts is warranted given the road safety and public health implications. (Source: Occupational and Environmental Medicine)

Lung and extrathoracic cancer incidence among underground uranium miners exposed to radon progeny in the Pribram region of the Czech Republic: a case-cohort study
Conclusions We observed positive associations between cumulative radon exposure and lung cancer, consistent with prior studies. We observed a positive association between cumulative radon exposure and extrathoracic cancers, although the estimates were small. There was evidence that the association between radon and lung cancer was modified by smoking in a multiplicative or super-multiplicative fashion. (Source: Occupational and Environmental Medicine)

Cardiovascular responses to physical activity during work and leisure
Conclusions Cardiovascular load was higher on workdays versus non-workdays with no compensatory hypotensive response following workdays. Daily MVPA may differentially affect ambulatory cardiovascular load and nocturnal HRV on workdays versus non-workdays, supporting the physical activity health paradox hypothesis. Suicide among Scottish military veterans: follow-up and trends
Conclusions Veterans are not at increased risk of suicide overall. The highest risk for both men and women is in middle age, many years after leaving service. (Source: Occupational and Environmental Medicine)

Workplace interventions that aim to improve employee health and well-being in male-dominated industries: a systematic review
The published evidence on whether workplace health and well-being interventions are as effective in male-dominated industries compared with mixed-gender environments has not been synthesised. We performed a systematic review of workplace interventions aimed at improving employee health and well-being in male-dominated industries. We searched Web of Knowledge, PubMed, Medline, Cochrane Database and Web of Science for articles describing workplace interventions in male-dominated industries that address employee health and well-being. The primary outcome was to determine the effectiveness of the intervention and the process e...

Suicide among Scottish military veterans
In September 2021, the UK Government announced that for the first time the numbers of ex-service personnel who take their own lives will be officially recorded, alongside a 10-year look-back to examine veteran deaths through suicide.1 This followed an agreement between the Office for Veterans’ Affairs, the Ministry of Defence (MOD) and the Office for National Statistics. The paper in this Journal by Beverly Bergman and colleagues,2 Suicide Among Scottish Military Veterans, is therefore timely and significantly advances our knowledge of suicide among veterans. It builds on an earlier paper from the same group publishe...

Dying for sport
For centuries, seeking a better life has presented major obstacles for those who have the need and the courage to relocate their lives. Recent media attention has focused on immigrant families escaping famine, war or other disastrous circumstances in their homelands. The popular media has written much less about migrant workers who travel abroad to earn a living not possible in their home settings. Commonly, family members who stay home are completely dependent on funds sent back while, in the host country, their migrant relatives are often employed in dirty, dangerous and demanding jobs and required to return to their cou...

Correction: Insufficient respiratory hazard identification in the safety data sheets for cleaning and disinfection products used in healthcare organisations across England and Wales
Lee S, Povey AC, Seed MJ, et al. Insufficient respiratory hazard identification in the safety data sheets for cleaning and disinfection products used in healthcare organisations across England and Wales. Occup Environ Med. 2021;78:293–295. doi:10.1136/oemed-2020-106881 This paper identified respiratory sensitisers or irritants that were not included on the Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) by using a Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationship (QSAR) model and the list of asthmagens established by the Association of Occupational and Environmental Clinics (AOEC). The QSAR model can only be applied to Low-Molecular-Weight (LM...

Global infectious disease risks associated with occupational exposure among non-healthcare workers: a systematic review of the literature
Conclusion Many of these respiratory tract pathogens were readily transmitted where employees congregate (workplace risk factors), while worker risk factors seemed to be of increasing importance. By analysing existing knowledge of these risk factors, identifying new risks and susceptible risk groups, this review aimed to raise awareness of the issue and provide reliable information to establish more effective preventive measures. Repetitive and forceful movements of the hand as predictors of treatment for pain in the distal upper extremities
Conclusions In men, occupational exposure to hand force more than doubled the risk of seeking treatment. The results for exposure to repetition were less clear. In women, we could not find any indications of an increased risk neither for force nor for repetition. (Source: Occupational and Environmental Medicine)
