Prospects of returning to work after lumbar spine surgery for patients considering disability pension: a nationwide study based on data from the Norwegian Registry for Spine Surgery
Conclusion Less than a quarter of the DP-applicants returned to work 12 months after surgery. This association remained strong, also when adjusted for the confounders as well as other covariates related RTW. (Source: Occupational and Environmental Medicine)

Prevalence and risk factors for silicosis among a large cohort of stone benchtop industry workers
Conclusion Screening this large cohort of SBI workers identified exposure to dry processing of stone was common and the prevalence of silicosis was high. Compared with HRCT chest, CXR and RFTs had limited value in screening this high-risk population. (Source: Occupational and Environmental Medicine)

Length of employment in workplaces handling hazardous chemicals and risk of cancer among Japanese men
Conclusions There is a high risk of cancer among workers, especially smokers, employed in workplaces handling regulated chemicals in Japan. Thus, future measures for chemical management in workplaces are needed to prevent avoidable cancers. (Source: Occupational and Environmental Medicine)

Historical shift in pathological type of progressive massive fibrosis among coal miners in the USA
Conclusions Our findings demonstrate a shift in PMF types among US coal miners, from a predominance of coal- and mixed-type PMF to a more commonly encountered silica-type PMF. These results are further evidence of the prominent role of RCS in the pathogenesis of pneumoconiosis among contemporary US coal miners. (Source: Occupational and Environmental Medicine)

Concordance between the Stockholm Workshop Scale and the International Consensus Criteria for grading the severity of neurosensory manifestations in hand-arm vibration syndrome in a Swedish clinical setting
Conclusions Using the ICC resulted in lower grades of the severity of HAVS. This should be taken into consideration when giving medical advice and approving workers’ compensation. Clinical examinations should be performed to detect affected sensory units with both small and large nerve fibres and more attention should be paid to cold intolerance. Testicular germ cell tumour risk by occupation and industry: a French case-control study - TESTIS
Conclusions Our findings suggest that agricultural, electrical and electronics workers, and salesmen workers experience an increased risk of TGCT. Further research is needed to identify the agents or chemicals in these high-risk occupations which are relevant in the TGCT development. Trial registration number NCT02109926. Coverage, completion and outcomes of COVID-19 risk assessments in a multi-ethnic nationwide cohort of UK healthcare workers: a cross-sectional analysis from the UK-REACH Study
We examined the association of ethnicity, other sociodemographic/occupational factors and actual/perceived COVID-19 risk variables on our outcomes using multivariable logistic regression. Results 8649 HCWs were included in total. HCWs from ethnic minority groups were more likely to report being offered a risk assessment than white HCWs, and those from Asian and black ethnic groups were more likely to report having completed an assessment if offered. Ethnic minority HCWs had lower odds of reporting having their work change as a result of risk assessment. Those from Asian and black ethnic groups were more likely to report n...

Impact of asthma on working life: an analysis of the French CONSTANCES cohort
Conclusion The career path of asthmatic adults is more often unfavourable than that of those without asthma. Efforts should be made to support people with asthma in the workplace, in order to maintain employment and facilitate the return to work. (Source: Occupational and Environmental Medicine)

Radon and lung cancer in the pooled uranium miners analysis (PUMA): highly exposed early miners and all miners
Conclusions This new large, pooled study confirms and supports a linear exposure–response relationship between cumulative radon exposure and lung cancer mortality which is jointly modified by temporal and exposure factors. (Source: Occupational and Environmental Medicine)

Occupational risks for infection with influenza A and B: a national case-control study covering 1 July 2006-31 December 2019
Conclusions Contact with infected patients, low social distance and sharing surfaces are dimensions that increase risk for influenza A and B. Further safety measures are needed to diminish viral transmission in these contexts. (Source: Occupational and Environmental Medicine)

Night work and breast cancer risk in a cohort of female healthcare employees in Stockholm, Sweden
Conclusions This study is limited by a short period of follow-up and a lack of information on night work before 2008. Most exposure metrics showed no association with breast cancer risk, but there was an elevated risk of postmenopausal breast cancer in women after 8 or more years of night work. Vitamin D status in active duty Navy military personnel: a systematic review
Conclusions This new systematic review underlines the high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in the Navy, especially in submariners, and the need to implement measures to prevent vitamin D deficiency. Serum 25(OH)D data available and the heterogeneity of the studies limited a pooled analysis. Most studies included only submariners, which may limit generalisability to all active duty Navy military personnel. Further research on this topic should be promoted. Extreme heat and work injuries in Kuwaits hot summers
Conclusion We found substantial increases in the risk of occupational injury from extremely hot temperatures despite the ban on midday work policy in Kuwait. ‘Calendar-based’ regulations may be inadequate to provide occupational heat protections, especially for migrant workers. Cooling vest improves surgeons thermal comfort without affecting cognitive performance: a randomised cross-over trial
Conclusions A cooling vest worn during surgery lowered core and skin temperatures, improved thermal comfort, and decreased perceptions of sweating and fatigue, but did not improve cognition. Thermal discomfort during major orthopaedic surgery is thus largely preventable, but cooling does not affect cognition. Trial registration number NCT04511208.
