Impaired Control (Both Attempts to Control Drinking and Failed Control) as Prospective Predictors of Negative Outcomes among Young Adults who Drink Heavily
CONCLUSIONS: These findings provide further evidence supporting impaired control over alcohol use as a risk factor among young adults. Those reporting both higher attempted and failed control drank the most per day. Either attempted or failed control was associated with negative consequences. Those reporting both higher attempted and failed control may be in greatest need of intensive intervention.PMID:38315139 | DOI:10.15288/jsad.22-00362 (Source: Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs)

Why do only some cohort studies find health benefits from low volume alcohol use? A systematic review and meta-analysis of study characteristics that may bias mortality risk estimates
CONCLUSIONS: Studies with lifetime selection biases may create misleading positive health associations. These biases pervade the field of alcohol epidemiology and can confuse communications about health risks. Future research should investigate whether smoking status mediates, moderates or confounds alcohol-mortality risk relationships.PMID:38289182 | DOI:10.15288/jsad.23-00283 (Source: Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs)

Alcohol and Substance Use Among the Working Age Population: A Nationwide Study of Fall-Related Emergency Department Visits
CONCLUSION: Individuals with alcohol- and substance-use with depression were twice as likely to visit EDs for fall injuries. Higher fall-related ED visits in the WAP were attributed to alcohol and substance use. Identified factors could improve injury prevention and timely intervention among the WAP in the United States.PMID:38270911 | DOI:10.15288/jsad.23-00330 (Source: Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs)

Threat, Distract, and Discredit: cannabis industry rhetoric to defeat regulation of high THC cannabis products in Washington State, USA
CONCLUSION: Cannabis industry actors have leveraged several arguments employed by industry actors of other health compromising products to undermine initiatives to advance public health. They have also adapted rhetoric from other industries to the unique conditions of the cannabis regulatory landscape.PMID:38270913 | DOI:10.15288/jsad.23-00277 (Source: Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs)

Estimating the Effects of Hypothetical Alcohol Minimum Unit Pricing Policies on Alcohol Use and Deaths: A State Example
CONCLUSIONS: Modestly increasing the prices of the lowest-priced spirits with an MUP policy in a single state could save hundreds of lives annually. This suggests that alcohol MUP policies could be an effective strategy for improving public health in the United States, consistent with the World Health Organization's recommendation.PMID:38252451 | PMC:PMC10846602 | DOI:10.15288/jsad.22-00274 (Source: Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs)

Investigating associations of substance use and dependence with planned versus unplanned suicide attempt
CONCLUSIONS: Though substance-related outcomes are consistently associated with suicide attempt, there was little evidence that substance use and dependence are related to risk for unplanned versus planned suicidal behavior.PMID:38227385 | DOI:10.15288/jsad.23-00205 (Source: Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs)

How Does Parental Monitoring Reduce Adolescent Substance Use? Preliminary Tests of Two Potential Mechanisms
CONCLUSION: In this community-based sample of teens, we failed to support prior punishment-centric theories of how monitoring might reduce teen substance use. Rather, monitoring may directly discourage teens from using substances regardless of whether it increases parents' awareness of substance use or results in more punishment. Replication in other samples and contexts is needed.PMID:38227391 | DOI:10.15288/jsad.23-00297 (Source: Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs)

Sales to Apparently Intoxicated Customers in Three States with Different Histories of Responsible Beverage Service Training
CONCLUSIONS: Over-service of alcohol to apparently intoxicated customers was frequent and likely elevated risk of DWI and other harms. The lower sales in New Mexico and Washington than California may show that a policy approach prohibiting sales to intoxicated customers combined with well-established RBS training can reduce over-service. Further efforts are needed to reduce over-service.PMID:38227392 | DOI:10.15288/jsad.23-00258 (Source: Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs)

Co-occurring alcohol misuse and criminal offending in adolescence: Is it a matter of similarity, severity or accumulation of risk factors?
CONCLUSION: The results indicated that the risk factors for developing co-occurring alcohol misuse and criminal offending in adolescence are similar rather than unique, and that it is the accumulation of the risk factors, as opposed to their severity, which is associated with co-occurring behaviors when comparing to alcohol misuse and criminal offending only.PMID:38206650 | DOI:10.15288/jsad.22-00379 (Source: Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs)

Comparing Drinking Game Motives, Behaviors, and Consequences among Varsity Athletes, Recreational Athletes, and Non-Student-Athletes: A Multisite University Study
CONCLUSIONS: These findings shed light on some risky drinking patterns and motives of recreational athletes who are often overlooked and under-resourced in health research and clinical practice. Recreational and varsity student-athletes could benefit from alcohol screening and prevention efforts, which can include provision of competitive and alcohol-free social activities and promotion of alcohol protective behavioral strategies to help reduce recreational athletes' risk for harm while playing DG.PMID:38206658 | DOI:10.15288/jsad.23-00128 (Source: Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs)

Where do adults in the United States obtain cannabis? A nationally representative study examining the relationships between sociodemographic factors, cannabis use characteristics and sources of cannabis
CONCLUSION: We identified key sociodemographic and cannabis use characteristics that may influence where individuals obtain cannabis, which are important for cannabis behavior surveillance and cannabis use prevention and intervention strategies to consider.PMID:38206664 | DOI:10.15288/jsad.23-00254 (Source: Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs)

Canada's alcohol deficit, 2007-2020: Social cost, public revenue, magnitudes of alcohol use and the per-drink net deficit for a fourteen-year period
DISCUSSION: Both alcohol use and the resulting public alcohol deficit are high in Canada. To mitigate these losses to the well-being of Canadians and their economy, government planners, regulators and policymakers must urgently deploy evidence-based alcohol policies towards reducing the magnitude of alcohol used in Canada.PMID:38206668 | DOI:10.15288/jsad.23-00241 (Source: Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs)
