Text Messages Conveying Parent Drinking Limits: A Potential Avenue for Preventing and Reducing Alcohol Use in College Students
CONCLUSION: Findings from this study provide initial support for future studies to investigate the effects of limit setting text messages sent from parents on college student drinking, as well as the effects of text messages sent from parents requiring that students check-in.PMID:38563266 | DOI:10.15288/jsad.23-00263 (Source: Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs)

Examining NSDUH's Assessment of Fentanyl Use: A Comparison of Trends in Fentanyl Use and Fentanyl Overdose Deaths from 2015-2020
CONCLUSION: Per NSDUH data, the prevalence of fentanyl misuse did not significantly increase in tandem with synthetic opioid overdose deaths from 2015 to 2020. Scrutiny of NSDUH's approach to assessing fentanyl misuse casts doubt on the utility of NSDUH fentanyl data collection. We acknowledge recent changes to the survey and recommend two further changes to optimize a vital source of data on behaviors related to the opioid overdose crisis.PMID:38563278 | DOI:10.15288/jsad.23-00247 (Source: Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs)

Daily Associations Between Injunctive Drinking Norms and Alcohol Consumption
CONCLUSIONS: This study provides one of the first examinations of daily fluctuations in injunctive drinking norms. As norms represent a malleable target for intervention (White et al., 2019), results offer new information regarding possible intervention targets.PMID:38563280 | DOI:10.15288/jsad.23-00250 (Source: Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs)

A perspective on psychedelics as treatments for addictions: Past, Present, and Future
J Stud Alcohol Drugs. 2024 Mar 22. doi: 10.15288/jsad.23-00032. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis Perspectives piece gives a brief overview on the last 70 years of psychedelic research in relation to the treatment of mental illness with a particular focus on addictions. We briefly precis the work in the 19650s/60s that started following the discovery of LSD. Then we overview research developments over the past twenty years driven by emerging neuroscience on these agents, the rise of MDMA use in psychotherapy and the emergence of ketamine as a treatment for mental illnesses. We then briefly outline new research on the brai...

Event-level drinking intentions, social drinking contexts, and motives affect alcohol consumption among same-sex female couples
CONCLUSIONS: Findings suggest that partner influences have a strong effect on drinking at the daily level, and can be strengthened or weakened when drinking for specific reasons. These findings expand on prior daily diary research on the effects of drinking motives by examining how these processes unfold in same-sex female couples and their intersection with partner intentions.PMID:38517748 | DOI:10.15288/jsad.23-00203 (Source: Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs)

Evidence for the induction of analgesic cross-tolerance between opioid and apelin/APJ systems in male rats
CONCLUSION: Chronic administration of apelin or morphine induces analgesic cross-tolerance that may, in part, be mediated through receptor interactions and downregulation. The demonstrated efficacy of F13-A in these experiments highlights its potential as a novel target for improving pain management through the inhibition of the apelin/APJ signaling pathway, meriting further investigation.PMID:38517751 | DOI:10.15288/jsad.23-00377 (Source: Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs)
