The effect of non-participation on the prevalence of food insecurity in a population-based cohort in Portugal
AbstractNon-participation can be a source of selection bias. We evaluated the effect of non-participation on food insecurity prevalence among 2942 young adults from the EPITeen cohort (Portugal), which we have followed since assembling the cohort in 2003 –2004. We conducted a cross-sectional study when the cohort participants were 26 years old. To examine the effect of non-participation, we statistically imputed the missing data on food security status using multivariate imputation by chained equations based on characteristics associated with foo d insecurity, specifically household income perception, education and hous...

Progress and challenges in tobacco control policies in Mexico, 2003 –2017: an approach using the Tobacco Control Scale
AbstractThe study aims to assess the implementation of tobacco control policies in Mexico from 2003 through 2017 using the Tobacco Control Scale (TCS). The TCS is a research tool widely used in the European region. It facilitates assessment of tobacco control policy implementation based on six cost-effective interventions: tobacco taxes, smoke-free policies, advertising bans, public spending on the information campaign, health warnings, and smoking cessation treatment, reflecting results in a total score between 0 and 100. From 2003 through 2017, Mexico's total score improved from 24/100 to 55/100, with substantial progres...

Culture and COVID-19-related mortality: a cross-sectional study of 50 countries
AbstractUsing a cross-sectional sample of 50 countries we investigate the influence of Hofstede ’s six-dimensions of culture on COVID-19 related mortality. A multivariable regression model was fitted that controls for health-related, economic- and policy-related variables that have been found to be associated with mortality. We included the percentage of population aged 65 and above, the pre valence of relevant co-morbidities, and tobacco use as health-related variables. Economic variables were GDP, and the connectedness of a country. As policy variables, the Oxford Stringency Index as well as stringency speed, and the G...

Health workforce retention in low-income settings: an application of the Root Stem Model
AbstractThe World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes a critical shortage of health workers as a growing global crisis. The shortage persists despite local and global efforts to recruit health workers ethically. Unequal migration of healthcare professionals, most often from low to high-resource countries, overwhelmingly defeats the objective of achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC). If not addressed, especially given emerging global pandemics like COVID-19, the critical shortage of health workers could decimate vulnerable public health systems. This Viewpoint describes the Root-Stem Model, a six-stage process of strat...

How reported outbreak data can shape individual behavior in a social world
AbstractAgencies reporting on disease outbreaks face many choices about what to report and the scale of its dissemination. Reporting impacts an epidemic by influencing individual decisions directly, and the social network in which they are made. We simulated a dynamic multiplex network model —with coupled infection and communication layers—to examine behavioral impacts from the nature and scale of epidemiological information reporting. We explored how adherence to protective behaviors (social distancing) can be facilitated through epidemiological reporting, social construction of pe rceived risk, and local monitoring o...

The economic imperatives for technology enabled wellness centered healthcare
AbstractA 2020 World Health Organization report underscored the impact of rising healthcare spending globally and questioned the long-term economic sustainability of current funding models. Increases in costs associated with care of late-stage irreversible diseases and the increasing prevalence of debilitating neurodegenerative disorders, coupled with increases in life expectancy are likely to overload the healthcare systems in many nations within the next decade if not addressed. One option for sustainability of the healthcare system is a change in emphasis from illness to wellness centered care. An attractive model is th...

Implementation of Canada ’s youth justice minimum age of 12: implications for children in Canada and globally
AbstractYouth justice minimum age thresholds vary widely and are garnering increased global attention. In 1984, legislation in Canada excluded all children under age 12 from its youth justice system, yet few studies have examined implementation of the statute. We interviewed 22 experts across Canada to understand how the law functions and to guide responses in Canada and other nations. We used an inductive, thematic analysis process. Experts reported that excluding children under 12 from Canada ’s youth justice system has been effective in eliminating juvenile legal processing for children under 12, and promoting respons...

Factors influencing attraction and retention of frontline health workers in remote and rural areas in Nigeria: a discrete choice experiment
AbstractThe policy thrust in Nigeria is to ensure qualified, skilled, and adequate health workforce to achieve universal health coverage. We designed a discrete choice experiment to determine the combinations of incentives that may increase the attraction and retention of frontline health workers. We conducted the study in Bauchi State amongst 145 students and health workers. Health workers are 14.6 and 14.4 times more likely to take up a rural posting or continue to stay in their present rural posts if there was basic housing and improvement of the quality of the facilities respectively. The preference for rural job locat...
