Post-meal endogenous insulin secretion was significantly lower in head than in body/tail cancer of the pancreas
CONCLUSION: Characteristically, pancreatic head cancer was associated with decreased endogenous insulin secretion as compared to body/tail cancer. J. Med. Invest. 70 : 350-354, August, 2023.PMID:37940518 | DOI:10.2152/jmi.70.350 (Source: Journal of Medical Investigation)

Assessment of multiple domains of pain following BNT162b2 mRNA COVID-19 vaccination
J Med Invest. 2023;70(3.4):355-360. doi: 10.2152/jmi.70.355.ABSTRACTPain at the injection site is the most frequent reaction among COVID-19 vaccine recipients, but its characteristics were not fully described yet. The purpose of this study was to investigate multiple domains of pain following BNT162b2 mRNA vaccination. We included 107 subjects undergoing primary shot of the vaccination twice into deltoid muscle with a 3-week interval. They completed 6 sessions of pain assessments, one before the first and second dose (1-0, 2-0), and 1st/7th day after the first and second dose (1-1/1-7, 2-1/2-7). Pain visual analog scale (V...

Early Prediction of Radiotherapeutic Efficacy in a Mouse Model of Non-Small Cell Lung Carcinoma Using < sup > 18 < /sup > F-FLT and < sup > 18 < /sup > F-FDG PET/CT
This study investigated the usefulness of [18F]-3'-deoxy-3'-fluorothymidine (18F-FLT) and [18F]-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose (18F-FDG) positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) imaging for predicting the therapeutic efficacy of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) irradiation at an early stage after radiation treatment. Mice were xenografted with the human lung adenocarcinoma line A549 or large cell lung cancer line FT821. Tumour uptake of 18F-FLT and 18F-FDG was imaged using PET/CT before and 1 week after irradiation. In A549 tumours, 18F-FLT uptake was significantly decreased, and 18F-FDG uptake was unchanged...

How many times can patients tolerate reoperation for the local recurrence of colorectal cancer in terms of complications?
We examined the postoperative complications classified as Clavien?Dindo IIIb. The positive rates of the complications were 0 (0.0%), 0 (0.0%), 2 (13.3%), 3 (37.5%), and 0 (0.0%) for the primary, 1st recurrent, 2nd recurrent, 3rd recurrent, and 4th recurrent operation group (p=0.027), respectively. It is important to exercise caution in handling cases exceeding two reoperations (exceeding three reoperations including the primary operation). J. Med. Validation of a dietary balance score in middle-aged and older community-dwelling Japanese
This study assessed the validity of dietary balance scores (DBSs) by investigating the association between DBSs and nutrient adequacy (NA) in two Japanese populations. The participants were 65 community-dwelling Japanese from Tokushima Prefecture and 2,330 community-dwelling Japanese from Aichi Prefecture. Based on food frequency questionnaires or 3-day dietary records, we obtained 18 food groups. The NA score integrates nine beneficial nutrients and two nutrients that should be limited. We calculated four different DBSs: DBS1 consisted of five food groups (score range:0?20), DBS2 consisted of nine food groups (score range...

Molecular species profiles of plasma ceramides in different clinical types of X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy
In this study, we determined plasma ceramide (CER) profile using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. We characterized the molecular species profile of CER in the plasma of patients with mild (adrenomyeloneuropathy;AMN) and severe (cerebral) X-ALD. Eleven X-ALD patients (five cerebral, five AMN, and one carrier) and 10 healthy volunteers participated in this study. Elevation of C26:0 CER was found to be a common feature regardless of the clinical types. The level of C26:1 CER was significantly higher in AMN but not in cerebral type, than that in healthy controls. The C26:1 CER level in the cerebral type was sign...

Differences in incidence rate and onset timing of undiagnosed finger symptom among shoulder surgeries related to complex regional pain syndrome
In this study, UDFS symptoms included the following four symptoms in the fingers;edema, limited range-of-motion, skin color changes, and abnormal sensations. UDFS cases were defined as those presenting with at least one UDFS. In result, the incidence rate of UDFS cases was 7.1% overall (58/816 shoulders), 7.4% (32/432) in arthroscopic rotator cuff repair (ARCR), 9.0% (11/122) in open rotator cuff repair (ORCR), 1.4% (2/145) in arthroscopic subacromial decompression (ASD), 13.2% (5/38) in open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF), 11.1% (3/27) in humeral head replacement, 4.8% (1/21) in anatomical total shoulder arthropla...

Usefulness of new acoustic respiratory sound monitoring with artificial intelligence for upper airway assessment in obese patients during monitored anesthesia care
This study aimed to quantify the levels of aspiration and airway obstruction using an artificial intelligence (AI)-based acoustic analysis algorithm, assessing its utility in identifying airway complications in obese patients. To verify the correlation between the stridor quantitative value (STQV) calculated by acoustic analysis and body weight, and to further evaluate fluid retention and airway obstruction, STQV calculated exhaled breath sounds collected at the neck region, was compared before and after injection of 3 ml of water in the oral cavity and at the start and end of the MAC procedures. STQV measured immediately ...

Factors associated with anxiety and depression among caregivers of patients receiving medical home visits
J Med Invest. 2023;70(3.4):443-449. doi: 10.2152/jmi.70.443.ABSTRACTIn recent years, Japan has promoted home visits to support older adults, with caregivers playing an important role. However, caregivers generally experience a high frequency of anxiety and depression, and the factors associated with these conditions among home visit caregivers remain unknown. To identify the associated factors, we conducted a questionnaire-based cross-sectional study of home visit caregivers in Tokushima Prefecture, Japan. The survey included caregivers' Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale;sociodemographic items of patients and caregiver...

The association between sarcopenia and functional outcomes in patients undergoing convalescent rehabilitation
This study aimed to assess the impact of sarcopenia on functional outcomes and dietary intake during hospitalization in adults undergoing convalescent rehabilitation. We conducted a retrospective cohort analysis at a single rehabilitation institution. The Asian Working Group Consensus Criteria for Sarcopenia was used to diagnose. The Functional Independence Measure (FIM) score was used at hospital discharge to measure the primary functional outcome. Energy and protein intakes during hospitalization were calculated as part of the nutritional assessment. There were 126 patients in the research (median age, 73 yr;54% women). ...
