Molecular species profiles of plasma ceramides in different clinical types of X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy
In this study, we determined plasma ceramide (CER) profile using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. We characterized the molecular species profile of CER in the plasma of patients with mild (adrenomyeloneuropathy;AMN) and severe (cerebral) X-ALD. Eleven X-ALD patients (five cerebral, five AMN, and one carrier) and 10 healthy volunteers participated in this study. Elevation of C26:0 CER was found to be a common feature regardless of the clinical types. The level of C26:1 CER was significantly higher in AMN but not in cerebral type, than that in healthy controls. The C26:1 CER level in the cerebral type was sign...

Differences in incidence rate and onset timing of undiagnosed finger symptom among shoulder surgeries related to complex regional pain syndrome
In this study, UDFS symptoms included the following four symptoms in the fingers;edema, limited range-of-motion, skin color changes, and abnormal sensations. UDFS cases were defined as those presenting with at least one UDFS. In result, the incidence rate of UDFS cases was 7.1% overall (58/816 shoulders), 7.4% (32/432) in arthroscopic rotator cuff repair (ARCR), 9.0% (11/122) in open rotator cuff repair (ORCR), 1.4% (2/145) in arthroscopic subacromial decompression (ASD), 13.2% (5/38) in open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF), 11.1% (3/27) in humeral head replacement, 4.8% (1/21) in anatomical total shoulder arthropla...

Usefulness of new acoustic respiratory sound monitoring with artificial intelligence for upper airway assessment in obese patients during monitored anesthesia care
This study aimed to quantify the levels of aspiration and airway obstruction using an artificial intelligence (AI)-based acoustic analysis algorithm, assessing its utility in identifying airway complications in obese patients. To verify the correlation between the stridor quantitative value (STQV) calculated by acoustic analysis and body weight, and to further evaluate fluid retention and airway obstruction, STQV calculated exhaled breath sounds collected at the neck region, was compared before and after injection of 3 ml of water in the oral cavity and at the start and end of the MAC procedures. STQV measured immediately ...

Impact of early urinary catheter removal on successful voiding and physical function in stroke patients
CONCLUSION: Early removal of catheters may lead to early recovery of bladder function, improvement of physical function, and lower risk of complications in patients with stroke. J. Med. Factors associated with anxiety and depression among caregivers of patients receiving medical home visits
J Med Invest. 2023;70(3.4):443-449. doi: 10.2152/jmi.70.443.ABSTRACTIn recent years, Japan has promoted home visits to support older adults, with caregivers playing an important role. However, caregivers generally experience a high frequency of anxiety and depression, and the factors associated with these conditions among home visit caregivers remain unknown. To identify the associated factors, we conducted a questionnaire-based cross-sectional study of home visit caregivers in Tokushima Prefecture, Japan. The survey included caregivers' Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale;sociodemographic items of patients and caregiver...

The association between sarcopenia and functional outcomes in patients undergoing convalescent rehabilitation
This study aimed to assess the impact of sarcopenia on functional outcomes and dietary intake during hospitalization in adults undergoing convalescent rehabilitation. We conducted a retrospective cohort analysis at a single rehabilitation institution. The Asian Working Group Consensus Criteria for Sarcopenia was used to diagnose. The Functional Independence Measure (FIM) score was used at hospital discharge to measure the primary functional outcome. Energy and protein intakes during hospitalization were calculated as part of the nutritional assessment. There were 126 patients in the research (median age, 73 yr;54% women). ...

Molecular composition of adiponectin in urine is a useful biomarker for detecting early stage of diabetic kidney disease
In conclusion, we demonstrated a new index to estimate monomer adiponectin in urine by using Sand-EIA and ICT-EIA, and urinary monomer adiponectin can be a good early indicator of deterioration of renal function in diabetic patients. Association between early-term birth and hypoglycaemia in large-for-gestational-age neonates:A retrospective cohort study
CONCLUSIONS: Among LGA neonates, early-term birth is positively associated with neonatal hypoglycaemia. This indicates that among LGA neonates, those born at early term require more careful observation for hypoglycaemia than do those born at later term. J. Med. Does student evaluation of on-demand video lectures vary with student characteristics? A questionnaire survey of medical students at Tokushima University
This study aims to examine the association between the detailed characteristics/various contexts of students and the evaluation of online classes. An online questionnaire survey administered to third- and fourth-grade medical students of Tokushima University in September 2021-with 101 (42.8%) valid responses-showed the respondents' general impressions, comprehension, convenience, and desire for online classes even after the pandemic ends were significantly higher for the on-demand lectures than for simultaneous online classes. Notably, students who did not do other things while watching video lectures (10.9%) rated on-dema...

Suspected Aspergillus nodule histologically consistent with pulmonary nodular lymphoid hyperplasia:a case report
J Med Invest. 2023;70(3.4):499-502. doi: 10.2152/jmi.70.499.ABSTRACTAspergillus nodules (AN) are an unusual form of chronic pulmonary aspergillosis. On the other hand, pulmonary nodular lymphoid hyperplasia (PNLH) is classified as a reactive pulmonary lymphoproliferative disorder. A 65-year-old male was referred to our hospital due to a nodule in the left upper lobe. Histologically, a mixture of prominent lymphoid follicular formation, and hyaline necrosis were observed. Grocott staining revealed morphological forms of Aspergillus spp. in the necrosis. The final clinical diagnosis was suspected AN histologically consistent...
